"This is an adult Midland Water Snake eating its favorite meal, a catfish. We see this snake often on the river. It swims upstream and seizes the fish from behind. By taking it onto the rock, the fish will begin to suffocate The catfish dorsal spine can and sometimes will pierce the the catfish after it has swallowed the fish. The snake appears to not suffer and the spine will dissolved in time. These snakes are easy to identify as NOT being Copperheads because the widest portion of the dark brown is on the top of the snake. They are very aggressive biters. I am bitten by these more than any other snake." |
