I bet she was a decent ride. But perhaps you had a personal experience you can share....

I couldn't say anything about "the ride" but I can, from personal experience, tell you she was one of the nicest people you'd want to meet. I spent lots of time with her and her mother back in the day and considered her a close friend.

I was at this photo shoot with her at the old Saugas (sp?)Raceway.

Likely not, it's been or is being cut up.

I wonder why they're scrapping it there and not in one of the normal 3rd-world scrapyards

Probably afraid it wouldn't survive that long of a tow...

tevake 02-04-2016 12:05 PM

Speaking of surviving the tow, how in the world did that ship with the gaping whole in the port side make it to the dry dock?

porsche4life 02-04-2016 12:10 PM

They welded those big giant steel boxes to the side of it and filled them with air, essentially making it the worlds largest pontoon boat!

hope I don't get PARFed for saying this, but it appears to be a political decision. Keeping jobs in Italy.

Quote:

In December 2013 invitations were issued by Costa to twelve companies to tender for the dismantling of Costa Concordia, in France, Italy, Norway, Turkey and the UK.[189] On 30 June 2014 the Italian Government endorsed Costa's decision to have the vessel dismantled at Genoa by Italian companies Saipem, Mariotti and San Giorgio.[190][191]

On 14 July 2014 salvage operators re-floated Costa Concordia off its submerged platform and towed the ship laterally a short distance away from the coast.[193][194][195][196][197][198] As of 20 July 2014, the ship had re-floated 7.5 metres from its supporting platform, with 6.3 metres remaining.[199] On 23 July 2014, the Costa Concordia began its final journey to the Port of Genoa.[14][200]

On 27 July 2014, the Costa Concordia arrived in Genoa where it was moored against a wharf that had been specially prepared to receive the vessel for dismantling.[201] On 11 May 2015 Costa Concordia was removed to another location within the Port of Genoa to ease the access of road vehicles which carry the waste from the wreck.[202]
