I doubt that anvil is in danger of being stolen, so what's the purpose/use of the chain? Is that a common way to secure something to the anvil?

Or is it just there in case the Coyote needs it?

The horn of the anvil can be used to bend shapes around it, securing the anvil from a side ways blow seems to be the purpose. There are additional stakes into the wood to secure it from rotating in a horizontal axis.
