probably safer to be thrown out of the car anyway... In those days the driver sat in the crumple zone.

Masten Gregory, an American F1 racing driver (between 1957 & 1965) was well known for often bailing out of his race car before an impending crash.

"Gregory is only one of seventeen drivers to compete in all three events of the Triple Crown of motor racing- the Indy 500, 24 Hs. of Le Mans & the GP of Monaco & to have won at least one of those events. As a matter of record, the others were Louis Chiron, Jack Brabham, Jim Clark ( twice) Graham Hill (all three), Dan Gurney, Jochen Rindt (twice), Mario Andretti, Mark Donohue, Jackie Stewart, Denny Hulme, Danny Sullivan, Vern Schuppan, Stefan Johansson, Michele Alboreto, Eddie Cheever and Jacques Villeneuve."

"The Kansas City Flash": The Lives & Times of Masten Gregory

Interesting cat, although the 'bailing out' thing was a little off-the-dial in my opinion.

Cheers
JB
