This is funny because my hometown lore has a myth the this happened in a empty field near San Pedro, so much so the field was called 'Japs cove' (my Japanese friends were not too keen on the name).

It was a great place to go dirt biking or park near the ocean with your GF.

If that is the event I think it is (the great Los Angels air raid) they were firing at... wait for it... a weather balloon. There was a lot of damage on the ground from falling anti- aircraft ordnance.

They have a annual "Great Los Angles air raid" event at fort MacArthur, first few years the had a huge air raid siren and full auto guns going off. I think it freaked some people out because they have toned it down some.
