I think if it was a gullwing the engine would be leaning to the side. Good guess though, I must say. The gullwing door had huge sills - to get across a tubular frame much like what's shown. The intake runners also look 300SL-ish.

I guess I should have posted the story with original pic, taken by a friend. The female in the Nissan was at fault, said she was looking for her E Z Pass and wasn't expecting the Honda to stop in lane. (Honda driver was mistakenly in a "No Cash" lane without an E Z Pass and was waiting for an attendant.)

cool...

daepp 12-14-2006 10:46 AM

So it's a gullwing?

MJHanna 12-14-2006 10:48 AM

could be just a roadster

daepp 12-14-2006 10:50 AM

Space frame sure looks the same.

Hurra912 12-14-2006 11:00 AM

Yes. From '54-'62 the Gullwing and the Roadster shared the same chassis. Sorry, I forgot to include that in my previous post.

So where (and how) did he find that chassis in the jungle?

Craig 930 RS 12-14-2006 11:08 AM

Undoubtedly it is a Mercedes chassis.
I'd be looking at the chassis plate....if it still exists.

JeremyD 12-14-2006 11:11 AM

Byron has already left to trade something for it...

Seems like this has at times turned into the classifieds/used parts section -

Steve, you are correct sir, a 1955 300SL Gullwing Coupe!! I'm helping a friend sell it. Here is what it looked like when last raced, before being crashed in 1962:eek:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1166134528.jpg

It is for sale, has been with the same owner (who recently passed) since 1962. BTW, the 1956 300D next to it is for sale, but he is keeping the AMG 500E:D
