I'm just giving Ed a hard time. I'm sure he built a fine airplane. My Dad just always told me that Ultra-Lights were death machines so I can't help but think that every time I see one.

True...

The video I saw was from a cockpit camera that pilot had mounted in a small Piper ( I think...). A Cessna crossed on a climb too close in front and his prop clipped and fouled on a tow cable that was dangling from the Cessna, dunno what the cable was for, but damn if he wasnt headed for an unhappy ending.

black crop might be to complicated for some so I'll try a crop that's easier on the neurons.

Cue art

How about a collection of Tad cues...for those who must know the price of everything? Close to the value of a GT3 pictured here.

i wonder if such a "chute" system is going to prevent accidents, or inspire new pilots to be more careless , and in return cause accidents because they rely on "the chute"

sort of like what we see with drivers in modern cars , laden with electronic aids and a gazillion airbags , rushing through traffic on wet roads, while putting on make up, having a latte, and talking on the phone...

The Cirrus' parachute system is credited with saving a couple dozen lives so far.

Pilots know that once the handle is pulled, the airplane will be a total write-off. That's a pretty good reason to be conservative. There have been a couple fatal accidents where the parachute may have saved the day, yet it was not deployed. The pilot was most likely trying to save it untill it was too late.

won't insurance cover the plane after you pull the handle ??

just playing devil's advocate here, making the analogy with cars and safety systems there...

the latte drinking , makeup splashing phoning modern driver couldn't care less about the write off of the car , as long as she believes that the 9 airbags will allow herself to exit the vehicle without a scratch...hence the expensive insurance premium you probably pay for your cars...

I don't care if they think it's dead or not. No way I'm hauling up that shark onto that flats boat, esp with me that close to the mouth!

I saw your comment about the baseball player thing, and the chute wouldn't have saved him there, but look at the white box on top of my wing, that's a Ballistic Recovery System (BRS). It sure offered comfort knowing that was up there just in case. The first course of any emergency is to fly the plane, the chute is there as an absolutely last measure.

I likened this to motorcycles, and felt my odds of survival were better in the air than on DFW roads...If you treat boats, bikes, cars or planes like toys, you can die in any of them. Treat them with respect, proper maintenance, common sense, and applicable training, and all can be fun.
