Seahawk 08-01-2007 08:14 AM

Kach,

I know you like interesting designs...I worked on the below project (not as an engineer but helping manage the government side of things) in the late 90's. It finally flew earlier this year. The Piasecki brothers invited me up. Pretty cool to see a plan come together;)

Can anyone fill me in one what this is/was? I'm guessing its some kind of VTOL plane but beyond that I'm stumped!

Looks like one of those devices out of the Adam & Eve catalouge....

Seahawk, I understand that the rear vectored fan is supposed to increase foward speed. But is'nt the VNES limited by retreating blade stall?

StevePH, check out the pontoons. Another one of those crazy Russian "pond hoppers".

Absolutely correct...as lift is transfered from the main rotor to the wings, power is transfered away from the main rotor transmission, in effect keeping the rotor tip speed (where they stall) below RBS. Like all hybrid systems (tilt rotor for example) the transition period is most critical. Maneuvering speed is everything.

I don't know where they are in the test profile, but VTDP seems promising:cool:
