It's the predecessor to the SR71 - the A12.
Interesting note - in the book Skunk Works it was revealed that the actual name from the beginning was RS-71 - But when Johnson felt the need to disclose its existence, he blew it and called it the SR-71. After the gaff, the Skunk Works/AF were forced to change their name for it = at the cost of many hundreds of thousands of dollars in the days before CAD etc. Every contractor had to change their plans, documentation etc all because the Johnson administration didn't want the boss to look bad. |
Glad the hear he survived - and amazing that he did! Now I have to figure out who Edwards was.
BTW - for anyone interested in this - or other - ground breaking planes I cannot over emphasize how good Skunk Works (the book) is. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1195238510.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1195238554.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1195238615.jpg |

Last note in the log book said he was going to try a "stall" next. The other test pilot had it flip and tumble on him when he tried it and told him not to do it. The History Channel has a good episode on this. |
Originally known as the Muroc Army Air Field, the base was renamed on December 8, 1949 in memory of U.S. Air Force test pilot Glen Edwards, who died while testing the Northrop YB-49.

WASHINGTON - Tiny robots programmed to act like roaches were able to blend into cockroach society, according to researchers studying the collective behavior of insects. Cockroaches tend to self-organize into leaderless groups, seeming to reach consensus on where to rest together. For example, when provided two similar shelters, most of the group tended to gather under the same one. Hoping to learn more about this behavior, researchers led by Jose Halloy at the Free University of Brussels, Belgium, designed small robots programmed to act like a cockroach. The robots didn't look like the insects and at first the roaches fled from them, but after the scientists coated the robots with pheromones that made them smell like roaches the machines were accepted into the group, nesting together with the insects. Given a choice, roaches generally prefer a darker place and the robots were programmed to do the same. When given a choice of a darker or lighter shelter, 75 percent of the cockroaches and 85 percent of the robots gathered under the darker one. Then, to see if the robots had really become part of society and could influence group decisions, Halloy and colleagues programmed them to prefer shelters with more light. The result, the lighter shelter was preferred by the mixed group 61 percent of the time, while the cockroaches alone picked it just 27 percent of the time. On the other hand, in 39 percent of cases the robots, despite being programmed to prefer a lighter shelter, joined the cockroaches under the darker one. The findings were reported in Friday's issue of the journal Science. ------------------------------ I submit that if roaches can be infiltrated, so can we. |

Camel Spiders are some of the wild things you find around here in the rocky areas. They scare the crap out of a lot of people because they will walk along side of you staying in the shade from your body as they move from one place to another. They have a nasty bite but are not dangerous unless you mess with them.
