Why didn't that last guy let go of the rope? Hoping for a brilliant recovery?

The point in hanging on is that it is your only means of control. You are not going to go any higher, faster or farther so there is not a down side. The upside is you may be able to pull yourself into a less painfull position to greet the water. I do this as amatuer and only go about 140' in my "old guy" age division.

Actually, it has perfect front and rear apron sections, and the nicest OE German hood I've seen in a long time. Engine lid is good too, and there's lots of little odds and ends to be pimped on ebay or thesamba. It also came with a partial busload of extra new parts. Oh, and a pan with a locked-up transaxle and locked-up brakes. Be still my heart!

I can't complain - it was free, and less than 5 minutes from my house.

Thom, the picture of the grass growing up where the VW's floor ought to be is excellent. It warms my heart, in a truly sad sort of way.

Ain't nothin wrong with that '66 Bug! Rebuild it!

You should see the 'free' Bugs around these parts - mostly iron oxide with plenty of flow-thru ventilation. You are lucky they don't break in half loading them on/off the mode of transportation.
