If millions did this, it would bust them. They pay the bulk rate for every envelope they receive. Probably about 20 cents. And the USPS would have a bonanza.
When a legit creditor of mine calls me, I say, "Oh good, I was about to call you and cancel the account. The reason? You called me." They don't want to see you go away, so they stop calling.
I just got Unocal off my back. The guy says, "Hmm, I see you've been a card holder since 1971. We won't call." Money talks.
