You weren't on a level playing field.
Borrow a modded 930 and give 'im a lesson. |
Maybe if you were using one hand to downshift rather then to take pictures you would of at least had a chance! I don't know whats more surprising, thinking that there isn't another car faster then a Porsche, or being surprised when one passes you. These post seem to come a couple times a month. Is there any enlightening reply that can be given? Off to the off-topic wasteland, I say.

Unless you are in a 911 with GT-2 type performance please do not go chasing after Skyline Godzilla's.
You will embarass us all. Especially around corners. |
I have only seen one Skyline GTR in my life. I saw it in Grand Cayman. What you can do with that car on an island that small I don't know but it was cool.

<i>"Cegerer, did you say a Cayenne beat a Skyline"</i>
Yeah, the Turbo Cayenne beat a Skyline, an M5 and several others. In fact, the lap time (8min 42 sec) it set at Nurburgring would have qualified it in the middle of the grid for the 1966 German F1 Grand Prix. |
Cegerer,
Ahhhh yes, but I beleive those crazed Japanese are about to release a V8 version. |
skyline crapline
I smoked one of those jap pieces of crap in my dad's modded
930. Just one more piece of ricer junk that bit the dust! |

Very competent vehicles. High reving, turbocharged straight six, and awd are very hard to mess with on the street. Even worse to mess with on the strip. But on the track, i have not heard very favorable things about them. Plus since they are grey market cars, they are extremely $$$$$$.
|
BTW, use the word cheap in mods very conservatively. The gentleman who tunes my father 951 stuff also does work with skylines and supras. Once you get into it, nothing is cheap.

Skyline
I saw this car also on the 5 freeway heading to a wedding in Fallbrook Saturday morning. It a genuine Skyline as I have seen a few now in So. Cal. This one looked serious, but I'll bet my buddy's Porsche turbo cab would take it. I was with him twice when we beat a Viper cab, then a month later Viper GTS.
|
How about "cheap" compared to most Porsche stuff? I'm calibrated to Porsche prices, everything else seems like a bargain.
|
Sorry whipped, once you get serious with any vehicle, nothing is cheap, especially limited production super cars like the skyline.

Speaking of ricers and mods.....the local CHP motor cop on my street just got back from a CARB training session. Seems they are cracking down on fart tubes....they pull them over and start them on talking about their cars.
They casually ask them to "vountarilly" open the hood.....he had a pic of all the mods that they were trained to look for...anything like intake, fuel rails, timing covers, turbos or exhaust that don't have executive order #s (smog legal approval certs) or look to be be modified now get a ticket with a special sticker that sends them to a smog referee. They can only drive the car to DMV/referee, work or school until signed off.....he called it the "do not pass go" ticket..... |
I was only referring to the bang for the buck. Skyline is stock rated at 276 but rumored to be actually over 300, Japan factory cars are limited to 276 HP by a "gentleman's agreement" between manufacturers. I do know that with a few simple mods like ECU, intake, exhaust, they start adding up HP in a hurry, and 500- 600HP is easy without cracking open the engine, probably hard to get parts for a Japanese market car though. Just for example, the 90-96 300ZX TT is stock 300HP, but with $1000 of intake, exhaust, and ECU, it has just over 400. I wish the $1500 or so I've spent on my T gave that kind of results.

The Skyline is relatively common in the UK. And yes, many are modifed. I can't say that it is a desirable car, at least not for me. It is another classic example of a car that does the driving for you. Driving one of these is not about the simple pleasure and delicate control of the driving experience. Nissan designed this car to be as fast as possible, rather than for driving pleasure. It has 4WD, 4WS, ABS/TC, power steering, I think even an electronic throttle. Afficionados please add more detail! Like a dynamically unstable jet aircraft, the electronics fly the car. You just have to tell it where to go!
OK, an exaggeration, I'll step off the soap box. I have nothing against these cars. I am sure it is fun to drive and mod, and no offence to owners. I just think the balance, lightness, delicacy and direct mechanical driver interface of the pre-'89 911 is distinctly missing in this car. It is a brutal and rather soulless device. To be fair, I have the same criticism of many current 911's. Though there are exceptions, like the GT3 and GT3RS. In short, I don't care if one of these overtakes me. Maybe it is an ego trip for the owner, but I am having more fun! |
