That's right, but moon rocks are pretty dark grey. To get the moon to look the way that I think it should I use the "Moony 11" rule.

I have no idea how a modern newfangled camera does this - I'm stuck in the past.

Nice... where do you buy film for a 6X7?

I imagine I could pick one up of those up at a good price nowadays, might be fun to play with.

StevoRocket 12-29-2006 04:33 PM

Judging by the photo results its a lot more than playing....

B&H (www.bhphotovideo.com) has great prices on film and other stuff. They're fully legit and easy to deal with - as opposed to some of the other shops with ads in the back of photo mags.

The Pentax 6x7 is probably the best bargain in medium format stuff right now. You could get into a body, metering prism and the killer 55mm f/4 wide angle for under a grand if you shop around. I get my used stuff from keh.com - they're fair and they are conservative with the used conditions. You can't tell "Ex" from new and I've never gone wrong with "bargain".

Nice one of Griffith Park, Ken. IR film? Never played with that stuff...

On with the required photo: A friend's wedding reception at the Fairmont Banff Springs...

I've been taking shots of the moon every night that I had a decent sky since the 22nd. The first shot is crud, but I thought it was interesting to catch the dark side. I went back and cropped the all the same and tried to get the post processing as close as possible while still yielding a similar image. I've done lots of tinkering in the last 2 nights with 100-400 ISO, smaller aperature and slower shutter speeds 1/160<>1/500. So far I've found that staying below 800 ISO and getting the focus right seem to yield the best results. I'm not sure that f5.6 vs f8 vs f11 really makes much difference as long as the exposure is comparable. I can say with 100% certainty that when you are looking at the moon thru the viewfinder, that you can actually see it move at 300mm. The first shot is a 2 sec exposure, so it's actually got some motion blur from top left to bottom right.

OK, My technique still needs some work and I need to get the tripod out. But I do have question for you.... I always thought we all see the same part of the moon. On yours (above), the "core" crater is at 9:00, while on mine (shot tonight) is at 5:00. I'm also showing a little more of the right side, assuming the "core" is the bottom. What gives?

B&H has been bookmarked and I will be putting in an order for a couple of rolls of 120 for the Yahsika and maybe some 35 for the old Cannon T90. I am taking a week in Morro bay February and hope the weather will cooperate... if the weather doesn't cooperate I will sit in the room, drink wine, and look at the ocean. :D

I checked out keh.com, all I see is a photography form... do the have a for sale form?

I wondered for a minute too when I first started getting these shots. Most of the moon pics show the big crater in the bottom right, not the top left. I realized that assuming you are in a similar position (probably anything in the northern hemisphere) you should get a similar view, but the big difference comes from the time of day that you take the shot. If the moon is directly overhead at midnight, and you take a pic at 8PM and another at 4AM they will appear to be inverted. If you were to stand in one position as the moon traversed the sky when the moon gets to it's zenith in the sky you wouldn't start doing a back bend to get the rest of the night, you'd turn around.

PS, gotta do some "curves" post processing, a little noise reduction, and a little USM to get the details/contrast that distinct.

masraum 01-03-2007 02:34 PM

You could get the same pic at either time. You'd just have to hold/mount your camera upside-down for one of the shots.

masraum 01-03-2007 02:42 PM

Here's one of the pics above before post processing

That's what mine looks like. What are "curves" and USM? I should send mine to you for cleaning up.

Thanks Z. I absolutely fell in love with the country. My wife and I are big on never going to same place twice but, with Switzerland, we are going to make an exception (or two).
