Planting some 15 gal. size twin-trunk Alexander Palms (Archontophoenix alexandrae) on a project. They are native to Australia and not widely used in this area of Florida, but are self-cleaning (fronds drop off on their own) and have a nice crown shaft and interesting flower stalk along with distinctive ringed trunk. While a little skimpy upstairs...these are really good "starter" plants with respectable height and will really take off now that they are out of their pots!

Very true, they are noisy and smelly. Of course all the smelly pedestrians with multi-colored tents (of which I am also one) spoil the view for the photographers and they can be ever so vocal about it. Seems like no matter what you do somebody's cornflakes have been pi$$ed upon :D

Tents? I'm too much of a wuss to stay in a tent in the winter. I prefer 10th Mountain Division Hut Association huts. I would freeze my butt off in a tent. :p
This one is called Vance's Cabin.

Sorry for the blurry pics, but I saw this 356 driving to work on Rt. 80 this morning. Probably worth a chunk of change!

About nine months ago, my dad and a few others planned a trip to Yosemite to shoot Firefall...

This isn't a pic I took, rather an old pic of the fire fall when they used to push burning wood embers over Glacier Point. I was privileged to witness it a couple of times as a kid in the '50s.

The Yosemite Firefall was a summer time event that began in 1872 and continued for almost a century, in which burning hot embers were spilled from the top of Glacier Point in Yosemite National Park to the valley 3,000 feet below. From a distance it appeared as a glowing waterfall. The owners of the Glacier Point Hotel conducted the firefall. History has it that David Curry, founder of Curry Village, would stand at the base of the fall, and yell "Let the fire fall," each night as a signal to start pushing the embers over.

Firefall ended in January 1968, when the National Park Service ordered it to stop because the overwhelming number of visitors that it attracted trampled meadows to see it, and because it was not a natural event. NPS wanted to preserve the Valley, returning it to its natural state. The Glacier Point Hotel was destroyed by fire one year later and was not rebuilt.

The Firefalls were performed at 9 p.m. seven nights a week as the final act of a performance at Camp Curry.[

Cool story. Explains the weird pix I saw in the gift shops. The pic you used is a bit more modern and was taken in February, when the water was running. There wouldn't be snow up there in July. As well, some of the "glow" in the surrounding rocks could not reflect the embers, as they are not in view of the fall.

I was going to joke that that must have been the reason the Glacier Point Hotel burned down, but the article ruins that joke.

Due to the amount of people visiting in the summer, you can see the meadow being trample to death. We were just up there about a months ago. The snow in the valley was beautiful. Best thing was, no one to fight with skiing up at Badger Pass. Yosemite is truly an amazing place. Now, I would love to see its sister parks in China, Haungshun and Jiuzhaigou national Parks. One day.

Dave, I know nothing about taking photos but those pics are beautiful. I like how you accented Half Dome. I don't know how its done, but very cool.

Thank you! I'm happy everyone enjoys them.

I did nothing with Half Dome, short of composing the image. Mother Nature did the rest. One just needs to know what location to be at.

Talking about trampling the grass, I'll post a pic of all the photographers at the location we were at for Firefall. We estimated around 750 people and $500,000 worth of gear all around.

No, no need. It will only sadden me. I remember going up there as a kid. There was no traffic, not huge tour buses, and there's always a place to camp in the valley or near by. Slowly, it needed reservation, then it was a year in advance. I haven't camped in the Valley since I was a little boy. The traffic is insane during the summer. I hear the same thing is happening in Yellowstone, so we now go to those places right when the park opens after winter or sneak in there in the winter months. There's something magical about hanging around the mountains in the summer that's really fantastic, but its looking like a thing of the past for us due to the amount of people going to those places.
