It's called a "Century Plant" or Agave, Z....look it up for the whole story. Not a true cactus....considered a succulent.

Nice Cereus cactus, Marv!

Trying to catch up on some cycle maintenance yesterday. Man that little 175 is FUN to ride!

Back in the day, frame tubes on 917 racers were all interconnected, completely sealed off, then pressurized thru a dedicated valve before each race. A reading was taken afterwards...lower pressure usually indicated a crack that needed repairing before the car raced again. The team almost always found that the 917 frames would develop cracks at some point during a race.

Good eye...especially on the M1! There are actually two 959s in that reflection...the garnet red one on the rack and a white one way in back.

The whole thing. Looking in that picture, you've got a bunch of "babies" that are growing up around the base of the big one. Those won't die, but the big Momz in the middle is done for.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agave_americana
Quote:
Although it is called the century plant, it typically lives only 10 to 30 years. It has a spread around 6–10 ft (1.8–3.0 m) with gray-green leaves of 3–5 ft (0.9–1.5 m) long, each with a prickly margin and a heavy spike at the tip that can pierce deeply. Near the end of its life, the plant sends up a tall, branched stalk, laden with yellow blossoms, that may reach a total height up to 25–30 ft (8–9 m) tall.

Its common name derives from its semelparous nature of flowering only once at the end of its long life. The plant dies after flowering, but produces suckers or adventitious shoots from the base, which continue its growth.[7]
I didn't take this pic, but you can more easily see the babies that will continue to live/grow sticking out from the bottom of this momz.

Just to keep things more On Topic...

I remember reading that some of the drivers were worried about driving a car with such a light-weight magnesium frame.
The engineers pressured up the frame with nitrogen and installed a pressure gauge on the dash for the drivers to keep an eye on.
if the pressure dropped that indicated a crack and they would pull into the pits.

But the rumor is that the gauge was intentionally broken and wouldn't show a drop in pressure no matter what.

New dumpster being dropped off for a some site prep we're doing later today....this is a 10 CY unit.

Cost is $200.00 turn key (includes delivery, pickup, and disposal of contents).

This company also offers 15 and 20 CY units. Very good service and a very handy product they offer.

Wife took this from the portico at the front of the house of a hawk on the power pole at sunset a couple of days ago. I thought it was a very cool pic.

That's BEAUTIFUL, Marv.....kudos to your wife!

Here are some plants I planted about 5 years ago at Mom's on the side.

They are Cordyline australis 'Dark Star'.

Interesting plant both in growth habit and durability. Very cold hardy which is always a nice attribute for this area.

I will probably be pruning the taller stems this year to help produce more uniformity in this grouping.
