That is a great picture. It reminded me of an old Rodney Dangerfield joke. Go to 9:10 in the clip below:) Submitted with love! <iframe width="857" height="482" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/jrFgD9-l390" title="Rodney Dangerfield Has Carson Hysterically Laughing (1979)" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen></iframe> |

Wandered up and into my mountain playground last Friday to assess snow loads and levels-
North Cascades highway gets closed every winter until about April at mile post 134- Ross dam trail is just a 100 or so yards from the gate. Much much less than normal snow pack this time of year, felt like spring was kicking in- temps above freezing and just a slight dusting of snow at 2400' elevation. Even the 6-9K peaks are looking light on snow. Winds up at 6K and above were ripping, found a nice spot in the sun to have lunch and drink in the area. Mountain air up there is soooo clean and tasty once the fall rain puts out the wild fires http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1708450926.jpg Normally 9K + Jack mountain would be buried in snow almost down to the 1600' lake level- http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1708450926.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1708450926.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1708450926.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1708450926.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1708450926.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1708450926.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1708450926.jpg |

I’m building a house in s neighborhood that’s transitioning. The house to our left/behind us reminds me of Sanford and Son, but after seeing what’s going on over there, it makes me sad.
Obviously, there’s a ton of junk all over the yard, front, back and sides. This morning, I saw a woman walk out of the raised mobile home in a robe and go into the shed. I think she lives there. Then this afternoon, I saw a guy pull up in a pick up truck and walk to the backyard and get in a broken down Tahoe. I think he’s living in it. Last week, I heard a couple at the Tahoe arguing. I’ve seen three or four adults, three children, four dogs, and a donkey there. Edit. I hope this picture is clear and not too big. Let me know. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1708566898.jpg |
The picture is clear. What’s unclear is why someone would choose to build a house by that mess??

A job I did - backyard pool. How do I both create privacy while blocking out objectional view(s)? In this case I elected to use a clumping (non-invasive) variety of Bamboo. One that has a confined footprint, yet can achieve heights of 20', or more. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1708608835.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1708608835.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1708608835.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1708608835.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1708608835.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1708608835.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1708608835.JPG Rainbird drip tubing used for irrigation - Kangaroo Fern used as ground cover under planting. Another. Objectionable views on all three sides of this backyard.......

It was before my time, but somebody in the company bought some really ****ty lots. Some worse than this one, we got rid of some, and had to hold on to some others. |

Bamboo is a great choice but you have to watch which varieties you choose. It's not rocket science (rocket - see what I did there? :)) but important to understand before making decisions. Quite a few other non-Bamboo choices....such as your Leland Cypress. |

I’m thinking the bamboo might be good, because if we build a berm and plant something such as bamboo on top, it won’t be like planning a tree, or even a Leland cypress that might topple easily. |

FYI, the Bamboo variety in my photos is: https://www.palmco.com/graceful-bamboo.html Common Name: Slender Weaver Scientific Name: Bambusa Textilis Gracilis Zone: 8B-11 Min. Avg. Temperature Range: 15° to 20°F Origin: Southern China Typical Height: 25ft OA Culms (Diameter): 1″ Habit: Erect with nodding tips Branches: Equal, lower part leafless Leaves: Small Uses: Screening, Weaving Noted the two bolded items, Cold hardiness and overall height.... Charleston's cold hardiness zone is 8B/9A, and a 20-25' height should suffice for any screening/privacy concerns. But definitely rely on your local landscape folks.......as they will know what works best in your situation. Here's some pics of the Bambusa textilis 'Gracilis' over a 2 year span from a project I did from back patio viewpoint looking out into their backyard. Sequence shows left side then right side, as well as the next two pairs, if that makes sense. These were in 7 gallons and I got them right before the grower was going to step them up so they were nice...... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1708652413.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1708652413.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1708652413.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1708652413.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1708652413.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1708652413.JPG I'd never go larger than 15 gallon and many times I'd buy that size and divide each one into 2 halves and plant those to stretch my budget. They grow very quickly and as long as the property owner is a little patient they'll get the desired result in time while saving a few coins. Also......I never planted mine closer than 7' OC....and would go to 8' and 9' without hesitation.......because they DO fill out and it's nice to leave a little room in between for them to fill out. My perspective as a horticulturist....not a landscape architect, who want everything brought in at mature size on Day 1  Lastly...they do fine with drip irrigation. My fav. is Rainbird but there are other brands. Get the 1/2" size with weep holes every 12" and weave the line in between or just a line both along one side and the other side in parallel. Again, let the local experts do it how they want - I'm just sharing my (proven) methods..... Note generous distance from fence and drip config........ http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1708653417.JPG |
Thanks, Baz. The reason for the berm, was to give it more instant height. This house is a drive under, so The extra height would help screen it sooner.

Guess it's just that I don't like man-made changes in the grade, unless they are made to look natural. Also, you'll have to stabilize the slopes with ground cover or turf....turf making the most sense. Not a big deal but now you have a slope to mow. Which might actually be fun for us car guys...lol.... So the slope would have to be a gentle one, in theory. Lastly the objective of getting a desired result "quicker" sometimes has a downside. But people being people.....you have to deal with the "I want it now" mentality. Admittedly, I'm a little anal about planting for the future and letting things develop over time. Realistically time goes by pretty fast anyway, but like I said.....being patient isn't what we usually run into with many clients..... |
