And if they're a monopoly, which they most likely would be, then it's that much worse.
That's a cynical attitude. The government hires private industry to do just about everything - build roads and bridges and tunnels, weapons systems, space exploration. Private industry is where all of the inovation and wealth comes from - not government.

Like Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson, I'm for limited government. Limited government is still government, but doesn't control everything. A socialist/communist government would never produce a Porsche (well maybe a 924).

And private industry doesn't get away with the crappiest, cheapest service. If they tried that, they wouldn't be in business long. Only government is a monopoly (post office) - well maybe Microsoft, but other than that, the market place is the best for providing products and services.

So how is that different from the elimination of the middle class, degradation of real wages, concetration of wealth into the hands of a few corporate elites, along with a crushing national debt? Does that instill life in a country?

no stable economy has a concentration of wealth. A stable, efficent, productive, and growing economy must have a strong middle class. That's a fact. You can argue the "concentration of wealth" all you want but the flexability of who is in this "concentration of wealth" varies thru the years.. meaning research who is in Forbes mag wealthiest groups over time. The names change. The flexability of our economy is what's always important. Concentrating control to a center stymies that flexability. Hillary's old health plan attempt is a perfect example. The current Social Security debates can be reduced to worker retirement funds flexability or no-worker flexability and gov't central control.
fwiw.. a current Hate Bush theme is the total amount of Hispanics in the lower income groups. The static number is Only a fixed point in time. What the Hate Bush crowd won't tell you is the amount of those Hispanics that are in middle class and property owners after 10yrs. I think it's about 60%. The dynamic numbers is being held back to manipulate and figure your stupid.. Really, how many Bush Haters will really try to investigate and understand the so called hard info being thrown at them.

"crushing national debt".. the size currently, relative to GNP, is not huge.. In fact it's very managable according to the big brain economists who are not tied to either the right or left. Debt is a significantly important tool to tweaking an economy. So the guys on the right are thinking "what's the left ranting about".. Well it's a good question. My simple answer it that there is a logical limit to the debt before it's a problem. Bush spent the bucks before the Dems and other Congressal Rep could spend it. Bush is trying to have a restriction on gov't spending and both sides don't want to limit the pork. Currently there is no limit except the voters as Sherwood mentioned earlier. Sherwood is so dam correct that pork promises made by both sides is obvious manipulation. So the pansy boy Beltway crowd, from Both sides, is either scared that Bush will win again and make a big push for debt limit laws in his 2nd term or pissed off that they got their pork stolen by Bush. The Congressional Rep's can't scream about it in public. There is only so much fork available until it's a problem. Today the Hate Bush crowd is manipulating everything it can.. and it's effective. The black vote is in play right now. The Rep's will probably screw up managing that issue with hard info. The Dem rant to the black vote is slightly failing to be effective over time. The Dem's are scared 'cause if the Dem's had managed their vote better Gore would have probably won.

the Nat'l Education Ass has been in a panic due to the performance of alternate school choice. They're the largest union in the country and have veto rights in the Dem Nat'l Comm on state issues, [2yr old info]. So they figure that a 5th grade teacher who has poor teaching performance is good enough to teach your kids about sex.. go figure.
