creature cat,

tell me more about your ROW Carrera. Is it stock? Thanks for your story and starting this thread...always an interesting read.

thanks,SmileWavy

I have no idea where people get the impression Porsches are quick off the line.

Porsches have always been mid-pack among sports cars in acceleration.

The advantage for Porsches is handling and brakes and in general, being good in every aspect of performance.

Do a little research on the cars you pick to race (should you decide it's prudent to risk that). The Cayenne was driven around the Nurburgring, as I recall, faster than all but a handfull of Porsches ever have been.

I agree with respect to 'normal' porsches, perhaps the quick acceleration impression comes from the 930.

The Cayenne Turbo was faster than a (well driven) Boxster S around the Nurburgring. And the Boxster S is probably faster than most of our cars, sorry, though I don't wish I had one.

ZAMIRZ 08-02-2004 12:20 PM

The Cayenne Turbo is faster around the Nurburgring than a standard 996 Carrera 3.6-liter.

How do you suppose Porsche can attract and justify a $90-100K SUV if it didn't have the capabilities to beat their own diehard traditionalist 911 owners in terms of performance. It's only logical for Porsche to win the new market segments with what they do best-Design and engineer a superb product whatever category they are going in. I bet their new 4-door sedan will kick the Jag's, Aston-Martin, and BMW and Mercs asses when it gets produced.

Plavan 08-02-2004 01:13 PM

The Cayenne turbo is 0-62 in 5.6.... Porsche has always been conservitive with 0-62 times those last 2 miles an hour add up. After driving a turbo Cayenne I would say it was closer to 5.3 0-60... Regardless, The thing hauls ass!

bigrubberjeep 08-02-2004 01:32 PM

The way I see it is if a Porsche Cayenne Turbo thinks it's worth his time to race a 20 years old car then it is because he thinks it is EQAULY matched. Sad when you condier his car WAS worth over $60K just less then 6 months ago.

Your's was only worth probably $20K if it was in mint condition and stillworth $20K after another race

His is probably worth $45K now since he "Raced it"

Not bad if you ask me.

svandamme 08-02-2004 02:00 PM

a turbo costs around 80K , not 60...

Mikkel 08-02-2004 02:17 PM

This whole quick off the line discussion puzzles me?

People here often claim that 911s aren't really meant for fast off the line acceleration. WHY??????

They're relatively light, have quite powerful engines and loads of traction due to the rear engine. Why shouldn't that be good? Also the acceleration times measured by various tests through the years show that 911s can indeed accelerate very nicely. (Ok they may not be gentle on the clutch/gearbox, but forget that now).

What comparable cars are faster off the line...

in the 70s?
the 80s?
the 90s?

Ac Cobra perhaps. Wildly expensive Lamborghini's. Other cars? I'm talking NON MODIFIED cars...

My car has between 230 and 240 HP. It does 0-62 mph in roughly 5.8 secs. How many other cars will do that without significantly more HP?

I think the Cayennes (esp. turbo) are cheap for the engineering and parts they contain. Doesn't make me want one by any stretch of the imagination, though.

I would love to own one 5-8 years fromnow when they are round $20K, perfect tow vehicle with the right badge on it.

It's kind of like the modern version of the old guys that used to pull their 1967 911S to the track with a 1973 VW bus

dd74 08-02-2004 02:39 PM

I'm not sure any car should be raced as hard as possible from 0-60 on a continual basis. I don't think anyone said the Porsche is slow from 0-60, it's just not the fastest. In all, it's splitting hairs. A 2004 GT3 is approximately as fast as a Viper GTS, Corvette Z06, or Ferrari Stradele Modena 360. I think the Viper and Corvette can handle the abuse of 0-infinity launches better than the Ferrari or Porsche - hard launches are where those cars accel. The Ferrari and Porsche, on the other hand, will probably out handle the American cars, and also out brake them. That's why all four cars are well-suited to race against one another. One has a talent the other may not have, and vice-versa.

As for the Cayenne, I think we all have to face the reality of engineering advancing much farther than our wallets can advance our dollars. I haven't paid much attention to the Cayenne, but from what I've read on this thread, it seems like a beast of a car that can do everything well and carry four or more people at the same time. All I can add to that is it's about time Porsche marketed an SUV. They were losing a lot of market share because they had no SUV in their lineup. As for it's power and handling prowess - well, what did anyone expect; that Porsche would build a slug?

I think street racing is a good place to fall out of love with your car. You can either wreck it or be humiliated by the other driver because of a variety of ulterior things like traffic, knowledge of the road, or more importantly, a mismatch in horsepower from one guy's car to the next. If you really want to see where everything measures up, it's going to have to be on a track.

cegerer 08-02-2004 02:52 PM

Actually, the Cayenne Turbo is around $100,000 new. The cheapest used one I've seen was $78,000 (with 20K miles). I'll be selling my S soon (over 60,000 miles in 1 year) and buying either a new S or a used Turbo.

bigrubberjeep 08-02-2004 02:54 PM

$100K or whatever, soon enough someone will have absorbed enough depreciation for me to take it when it is broken in just enough for me to beat it down for another 100K miles at less then half the cost of the first 100K miles

iamchappy 08-02-2004 04:14 PM

It's hard for me to understand how they can be so fast, The engine is rated at 450 hp and the weight of the SUV is 5200 lbs, which is about 11.5 lbs per hp. So much for the lbs to hp theory.
My 914 6 turbo carerra has up to 300 hp and weighs 2100 lbs which puts me at 7 lbs per hp and the Cayenne might have me in a dog fight. Porsche has done a fantastic job in creating the ultimate performance SUV I give them a ( a couple of tons ) of credit.

bigrubberjeep 08-02-2004 04:18 PM

I think the more acurate measurement should be Weight/Torque
