Resurrecting Black Cali Plates
My customer has the original plates on the 356 she recently bought. They have not been registered since 1978. Does any one have any suggestions on how she can keep the plates ? I've heard that once they fall off record the DMV won't re-issue them, then I've heard stories conflicting. Any one done this?

Unfortunately, California's YOM plate law stops @ 1962.
If you can provide docs (ie old pink slip or registration papers) that directly link those plates to that car, then it's relatively easy. Is the car currently registered? That will make it a little more tricky.

I have all the old registration cards from 1969 to 1978 and they show the plates are the original ones for the car. The car hasn't been registered since 1978.

Won't be able to do it then... although it never hurts to try. Check
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d03/vc5004_1.htm for the actual rule.

You have nothing to lose by trying, other than wasting some time by standing in line. The DMV link cited above is for the YOM rules, which are for removing a later series plate and replacing it with ones appropriate to the car's vintage, which don't have to be the exact plates that came with the car when it was new.
That doesn't apply here, as you have docs to show these plates went with this car, so I'd say your chances are good. Somewhere in the DMV code there's a section which describes what you're trying to do. You might have to try a couple different times to get the results you want, but whatever you do, do no let the DMV weenies glom onto your plates! They want nothing more than to take your old plates and give you shiney new ones, so the stoplight cameras can take your picture. One question I forgot to ask - is the plate sequence still clear? The real reason they want to destroy the old black plates is they use those sequences for those silly "boutique" plates.
