Edit - for a dirt bike combo I would go with a used 03-04 YZ250F for me and a KTM Adventure 50 for Zack. Should roll out at ~$5K for both if I shop around.
I would highly recommend the dirt bikes! When my little girl gets just a bit older (she's almost 5) I am getting her a dirt bike. IMHO that is the best/only way for a kid to learn to ride motorcycles. Not a bad way for an adult to start either. For some reason the wife gets quite nervous about our daughter riding a street bike, but has no problems with the dirt bike. Waaaay back when my first bike was the good old Honda Trail.

David - You're a Porsche guy! You belong on a race track! Get a bike you can take to track days a couple of times a year. It will take at least 6 months to wipe the grin off of your face at the end of the day!

My weapons of choice:

that 'Priller is nice... in New Hampshire there are "ways" of having it road legal... I've considered it in the past but the painful part was dishing out the $8k for a 250 when that's how much a brand new Japanese 600 costs...

Still possible here in CA too, Dave. I have a buddy with a gorgeous '97 street model, imported from Hungary. He's selling it for $10k.

At $8k, the 250 is not cheap, but it has got to be the sweetest track bike out there. Well worth it, IMO.

I was at "Italian Bike Night" for awhile last night in Santa Monica. There was a 911 guy there with his Tuono...damn sweet bike. WHen I feel the need to move up from the Speed Four, I think Aprilia will be the one.

ALthough the new Speed Triple is *nasty*...and the Thruxton is cool. So many choices...

My first bike was a Honda Trail 50. We also had a Trail 90 that all three of us (dad, mom, me) would ride on (at the same time!) out in the desert.

The wife nixed dirt bikes for Calvin...I can revist when he's older. She said something about it being justifiable homicide if I bought him a bike. I can get whatever I want for me (for a variety of reasons), but no motorized 2 wheels for the boy.

Hah! First bike I ever rode was a school bus yellow '67 Honda Trail 90. It's currently sitting in my brothers garage undergoing a slow restoration. It's got less than 600 miles on the odometer...mostly accumulated in '69 by my Grandparents touring Yellowstone on it.

I'll post pic's once she's presentable.

our 90 was red. THe trail 50 was blue, and I seem to recall also having a trail 70 (the one with the horizontal tube instead of a tank)

its a great bike. The new version has some nice tweaks, and it is a brutal brute. The twin high pipes look awesome. I might ride one in a few minutes as I'm hanging out while my 600 mile service is being done.

Or how about going back to dealer and offering something like $4500 for the 00 Triple? New tires, brakes, rear pegs and just ride it. Could probably sell it again for near price in a year and get something new. What ya'll think?

haven't been to that shop. I don't know that I'd go for a thrashed used bike. Think of it like a 911 purchase. Would you buy a car that had a crappy owner, or spend a few $K more (in this case, literally) for a brand new one that will get broken in right, etc?
