I can't necessarily say that some 996 owners don't wave, but guys, really, as a Porsch"e" driver of 25 years, each one is a wonderful car, regardless of when it was manufactured. The one I had that I wish I could ge back was an 82 SC Targa, but I can't find it. Right now I have a 996, my wife has a 968 cab, and we have a Boxster that I'm trying to trade for a 911 Targa (any year up to 89), since I can't find the one I had. I wave at all Porsches, doesn't matter which one I'm driving or which one the other guy is driving. By the way, 996s are great cars, they are faster, handle better, and more comfortable than 911s used to be. That doesn't take anything away from any of the previous models. Even the Boxster would beat my 82 thought the twisties, but I still want the 82 back. If a guy doesn't wave or looks down his nose at older Porsches, it's the guy, not the car. The 996s aren't holding their value very well, but that just means you can get one on the cheap for the price of a new Nissan or something. Ain't life grand!!!

and faces when I saw, pulled up next to or passed a fellow driver.... "IT GOES BOTH WAYS” I can clearly remember two of my first waves one in a blue SC just blocks away from my house coming from opposite directions I threw an arm up waving and the guy in his SC, (I know he saw me) passed with nothing more than a glance.... Some time later in my city a off white SC stock-looking was approaching opposites again and once again I got blown off after this I figured maybe they don't believe "It's (996) a real Porsche".... Well to each his own and sometime yes I'll admit I'm a little too busy to even change gears but if I get a wave I'm sure to return it so long as I can see it..... These cars are so new that the tech support is limited, I'm going to start with some tech articles in the coming months so that we can start to offer the same service and support to ALL Porsche owners across the board. Remember if you see me, give me a , I'm the one that usually drives a bit to fast..... Or I've been told. -Eli

I'll share an experience I had just yesterday, if only to illustrate how many different kinds of owners there are. I was driving Foxy Brown to work early in the morning and was stopped at a left turn light. I noticed in my mirror a familiar set of headlights approaching, so I waited to look over and give him/her a wave. Up pulls a silver Boxster with red interior, top down...the driver approached my car very slowly, taking a LONG hard look at it. Of course, he never acknowledged ME, but looked the car over and over. So maybe he's a Porsche enthusiast, but not a people person? Hey, it can happen...

pwd72s,
Maybe I ought to consider changing my avatar name to Dr Feel Good. Or, better yet, Dr Frankenstein. At least that sounds German ! Here´s one with the good Dr F. and his brides.

I own and drive a Porsche because the Engineering , Looks , Handling and Heritage of the brand also because I feel like been living in the 60's when F.B Butzi drives his Porsche (s) as an every day car. If People nod or not when I am driving I do not care. I like everything Porsche but sometimes People bought a new Porsche because the Status which is find for them some are good down to earth persons and others are crap. However is more noticeable than with (some) newer car owners they only care about being noticed , in my first Porsche Club of Mexico breakfast 2 years ago , my wife and I sat in a Table with a bunch of this guys and they do not even now what a Flat 6 was they only thing they talked about was his : properties, departments , resorts , cars & watches.Fortunately I have never seen this guys again. Fortunately That behavior is not the Core of Porsche Enthusiast.

because they are not 911
seriously, that is an old "cars trandition". Nowadays, if you want to wave at a porsche (or a 911), you'll be waving all day long

Most 996 owners (I say most, could be off by a % or two) have their heads up their a$$es, can you imagine how your peripheral vision is limited when you are viewing the world through your navel.

I've waved at, and been waved at from, a variety of cars I appreciate. Yesterday, it was a black Mustang GT that was particularily nicely turned out, and its owner clearly was interested in my ride. A Lamborghini Murcielago owner waved at me, as do muscle car owners, even pocket rocket owners. Its nice because we can acknowledge a fellow performance enthusiast - especially at a time where we seem to be under attack from all sides. Then there are those who own the vehicles but aren't enthusiasts. That's fine, buy what you want, I understand that they aren't going to wave back as we don't have that same kinship.

As a 996 owner, an air cooled 911 owner, and a Cayman owner, I can tell you that I notice EVERY Porsche that comes my way. I've been ignored in every car I have by the other Porsche drivers and I've been enthusiastically acknowledged in every car I have by some other Porsche drivers. Heck, I was sitting at a red light one day in my red 996 with my window down and some guy in a beautiful 356 drove up alongside and said "Hey, nice car! I love the color!" and drove off with a nod and a smile. His 356 was red too.
![]() Honestly, it doesn't bother me one bit if my look, nod or wave is not returned in kind. Some people are eager Porsche enthusiast and love ALL of the cars and some people just aren't. No problem. |

I had one waving his fist at me after I abused him with an 87 928 S4 (4 times). He picked on me & I never really understood what he was freaking out about.
