Wayne,

I used to be the same way. I hated 996s until I test drove an '01 at the local dealership. I absolutely loved the car. Now I want one. When the time comes to sell my '87 it will be replaced with a 996. I would do it today if I had the means.

no kidding, mine is 30, and my daily driver is 10 and I have had both on jack stands many times. Okay a few times on the daily driver, many, many, many times on the 914

I did not buy either of them for anyone but me, so you don't have to wave

I bought a 996 because I was told that I needed a more reliable and more modern everyday car than my 23 year old 944. I looked around quite a lot (honestly) but couldn't imagine driving anything other than a Porsche. I would have liked a Boxster but I really needed some back seats for the boys. I didn't want a Cayenne, so a 996 it was.
Let me tell you, I love it! Sure it doesn't have the same sound as you shut the door that the '87 has, but the AC works. It doesn't have the air cooled sound either, but it goes like stink. All in all it is a great everyday car and I'm so glad I got it. That said, I had a blast driving the '87 last weekend.
Someone said that there are those that buy for the pleasure of ownership and those that buy for the status symbol. There might be somthing to that. I like to wave at other Porsche owners, but I don't like flaunting my car and try to play it down at every opportunity, usually by telling people that they paid way more for their _____ than I paid for my car.

I disagree. I've spent lots of time in a 996 (02 turbo) and I much prefer my 72 in almost all aspects. On the outside, it's a MUCH better looking car (I've heard the 996/boxster headlights referred to as "fried eggs"), on the inside it's clean and simple, and in the soul it's WAY more fun to drive, both on the street and on the track. Of course the 996 clobbers it in every single performance aspect, no question. I really dislike the old 915 transmissions, so I'll give it the nod for that, too. And for daily driving or long highway drives, I do prefer the AC, more comfortable seats and the far superior gas mileage (under regular driving, not making extensive use of the turbo!). But still, if I had to choose one as my regular driver, it'd be the 72.

hmm...

Some good arguments here. I think I will just settle for one of each then.

You must not have a 34" inseam...I simply don't fit in the newer P-cars.

Heck, I was sitting at a red light one day in my red 996 with my window down and some guy in a beautiful 356 drove up alongside and said "Hey, nice car! I love the color!" and drove off with a nod and a smile. His 356 was red too.

Honestly, it doesn't bother me one bit if my look, nod or wave is not returned in kind. Some people are eager Porsche enthusiast and love ALL of the cars and some people just aren't. No problem.
Yep! Some people appreciate the older cars and are outgoing enough to express themselves and others simply don't care, no problem.... I always try to wave at other Porsches and complement other's cars, even if they aren't my favorite.

I didn't run through the whole thread, but I can say this. What this is doing is causing conflict. You are doing what the market needs, conflict. We are all Porsche people not porsch. I started with an SC, moved up to a 993 and settled with the 996 turbo. I also have a 65 912.

If I didn't look at your car while I passed by, my apologies. Not all of us 996 guys can drive and stare at other cars at the same time. Sometimes I'm too slow with the headlight beam flash. Oops. Again I apologize. Does this make me a bad person? To some, I guess. Do I talk about how great Porsche is all day long to my friends and neighbors? yes.
I'm a total fanatic. Yes. Sorry if my car isn't a mid-year, a 1973RS, A '67S, An SCRS, or whatever other style you would prefer I drive.
