I've always found that the Tomb Guards are over doing it.
Sure it's impressive precision in everything they do, but it's become a show and it detracts of the real purpose of what they do: Guard the Tomb, and for people to visit the Tomb...for remembrance of the fallen, unknown soldier.

The Brits have a similar changing of the guard, and while yes their uniform also has to be spotless, they don't make a fuss out of it on the parade ground in front of Buckingham Palace.. It's already supposed to be checked out before stepping out of their barracks (just like the Tomb Guards do check themselves before going out).

And yes, it is ceremonial to some extent, they do some effort to entertain the tourists.. It's not robotic nor are they doing it in spitting distance of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (They also have one)

Color film footage shot by a war correspondent. Home movies, in color, I could not look away. First half hour or so with narration done by said correspondent 30 years after taking the pictures. I apologize right now for the long video. If you go to youtube to watch it, there is information about what is in it. Ike at about 42:30, V2 and ME262 after that, actually all sort of cool planes that were pretty much brand new at the time. Closes with the nuclear bomb fotage, maybe this is where Kubrick got the idea for ending his movie
