This is video from a subdivision in Chalmette, LA, not far from downtown New Orleans. From the accent, don't think you are listening to someone from Brooklyn, NY. Chalmette is where Andrew Jackson beat the British during the war of 1812 -- actually the battle was after the war was over but this area had not "gotten the word".

Chalmette in St. Bernard Parish is a (was a) very "close" town where seldom did any native leave to live anywhere else. The population was mostly Catholic and Italian. Much of the greater New Orleans area looked like this. The City Park area and most of Lakeview had water to the roofs.

The National news seems to have focused only on the "9th Ward" and "New Orleans East". The devastation was enormous.

Please watch that whole clip. I am in awe of the devastation.

The only problem I have? It's my money he wishes to spend...not his, Yours, mine, everybody's. Yet we have no say, other than a (rigged) vote every couple of years. This krap makes me glad I'm nearly age 64....because the USA is surely headed down the ruinous path of socialism...Karl Marx thinking....
as taught in most USA government supported universities these days,

MichiganMat 09-19-2007 06:56 PM

Those Pell grants hes talking about put me through college at one of those "Karl Marx thinking" universities, the University of Michigan actually.

Those Pell grants that were taken away to fund god-knows-what made it nearly impossible for my little brother to attent college at another commie school, The Ohio State.

And the reinstatement of those grants by the Democrats a few months back are now helping my mother get her MBA at the age of 50, again at U of M.

Thats what good investments are all about, results. With educating Americans, IMO no amount of funding is enough.

Wow cash, that's a sad video thinking how many people died. Frikin cowards. What I don't understand is the size of some of those explosions? how much explosives did they use, and were they dug into the roads? Unbelievable.

That video kinda makes me not feel so bad about Abu Ghraib or any other the other "atrocities" that we have been accused of.

Regarding the IEDs... this is just some of what I read, and is in no way researched or whatnot.

It used to be that IEDs were usually remotely detonated small shells (such as morter shells) to large shells (such as artillery shells). But increasingly, they are finding more advanced IEDs that are actually purpose-engineered shaped charges. Some intel alleges these are being provided by Iranian military forces.

Regarding placement, earlier in the conflict the IEDs were mainly just hidden along roadsides - hidden in trash, debris, or animal carcasses. Just as the IEDs have evolved, so have the tactics.

This is from an Air Force guy I know:
Quote:

There is a lot of construction of new roads going on [in Iraq], so they will find where a road is being paved and place the IED in the ground under where the road will be paved. When the paved road is completed they will come back and finish the setup of the IED so they can detonate it. It is starting to get to the point now where we cannot look for the things we use to like trash on the side of the road or dead animals. We are paving over the bombs now completely hiding them.
Here is an excellent video showing an IED detonated in a convoy. It was placed in a culvert than ran below the road. Luckily, it was either too deep, or the charge failed to ignite fully.

THIS is how our troops are dying now. Not by face to face conflict, but by a cowardly enemy who has time and home-field advantage both on his side.

Pell grants never went anywhere, so there was nothing for the DEMS to reinstate. Pell grants are not available to Grad Students and never have been. Slight skewing of facts to advance the political agenda, heh, Mat?

You're right, my facts weren't correct about Pell grants, but federal funding for student aid was cut dramatically under Bush and just recently reinstated and advanced under the new Democratic congress.

from here

Under Bush, College Tuition Skyrocketed. When President Bush took office, the average in-state tuition at a public four year college was $3,164. The same tuition increased to $5,192 for the recently completed school year, a 64% increase in 6 years. [Washington Higher Education Coordinating Board.]

Bush Promoted and Signed the Largest Cuts to Federal Student Aid In History. President Bush pushed for and signed legislation that cut $12.7 billion from student loan programs - the largest single cut in history. The legislation imposed higher fees on students and increased the interest rate on parent loans. The bill also put billions of dollars in student aid at risk by cutting all of the critical funds ($2.2 billion) used to carry out and administer the student aid programs. [S. 1932, 2/8/06; House Budget Committee Minority Staff, "Key Provisions in the Conference Report on the Republican Spending Reconciliation Bill." 12/19/05; Rep. George Miller Press Release, 12/18/05; CQ Today, 2/1/06; Washington Post, 2/1/06]

But Under Bush, the Maximum Pell Grant Did Not Increase for Four Years. During the four years that the White House and Congress were under Republican rule, the maximum Pell Grant award was frozen at $4,050. The maximum remained stuck at $4,050 until it was increased by the Democratic Congress in 2007 to $4,310. [Committee on Education and Labor]

And you can't count me and my family as "lower income" students, working terribly hard to make ends meet while chasing that elusive American Dream.
