Anyone have the idea to buy property in Cuba?
A buddy and I were discussing buying up a bunch of land using a shell company (local buyer) and waiting for the gates to open up. My one concern is when Castro dies will the land deeds be any good? I have a feeling there will be huge changes in all facets of life over there.

The conversation started after we had seen a report on CNN about the possiblity of travel from the US within the next 5-10 years. I've heard about his brother but thats what they said about Saddam. We know how that worked out, lol.

Don't even think about it. It will be a bigger mess than what happened with the unification of Germany in which people were able to get their property back 50 years later.
I know some Cubans in Miami that have been waiting 45 years for Castro to die so they can go back and reclaim what they left behind.

Ask some Germans how it worked out for them. A lot of folks fled the GDR before the Wall went up, thereby forfeiting their land and homes to the state, which then rented them out for a song. Once the wall came down, a lot of those folks wanted their land back and it has been a legal nightmare. Their legal claims even motivated some descendants of German Jews, who had their property confiscated during the Third Reich, to file claims on the same land some former East Germans wanted back.
In other words, it would pretty tough for you to know your title is clear on Cuban property. Communist dictatorships tend to have a different view on eminent domain and land confiscation. This would be a guaranteed legal nightmare, if, not when, Cuba becomes a free country in your lifetime.

might be a good idea to wait a while; according to Fintstone the US is going to invade and conquer the ruthless Cuban commies:

Vash, I have mildly looked into buying property in China. From what I uderstand, the way it works now is no one outright owns a property free and clear. They get a 99 yr. lease on it. I don't know if that's from the time it was built, changed hands, etc. But since China's banks are saddled with a lot of bad loans and local officials there regularly confiscate land with no payment and no recourse (this is especially bad in the countryside), I'd be weary of spending anymore than you can afford to lose.

One of the guys here at work keeps ranting about Costa Rica and showing me real estate adds online from over there. Sure you can get shore front acreage with a house for a hundred thou.
But I'm not too enthused about moving to a place where spiders eat birds and insects are the size of rodents.
