Chix and Money, redux

So I'm @ Starbux yesterday, and while I'm waiting for my coffee, I strike up a conversation with this girl. She's probably mid-20's or so, pretty much average across the board. I had my work badge on, and she asked what I did. I told her, and of course she didn't what a 'systems engineer' was (kinda like a janitor, but for computers - but I didn't say that). The she asks "Are you rich?" Huh? I was floored. I asked what she meant - give her a 2nd chance in case she's some insane jesus freak or something - and she says "Do you make a lot of money?"

I think I'm "Ok" in the looks department and I make "Ok" money, although I'm no Jack Olsen, Nostatic or Motion, and those who have met me can attest that I certainly don't dress to impress (shoe size notwithstanding). I don't even own a watch, much less a 5-figure blinger. The closest thing I have to jewelry are some silver fillings, and I've been getting those replaced with composite as time goes on. I don't even have a cell phone.

I drive an M3 during the week, a '95 that I rarely wash. The only bling on it is a carbon fiber intake that I made myself. The rest of the time I drive one of my VW buses.

My house is average. All of my furniture is hand-me-down except my mattress set and my washer and dryer.. The only "lavish" expediture at my house is my shop, but only other car guys would notice that.

So what is it about me that brings out the gold digger in women? Does my implied implied frugality signal to them that I have oodles of cash in a Swiss account somewhere? (I don't - I spent it all on the 911 and the shop)

Superman 12-02-2005 09:49 AM

That stuff doesn't matter, Thom. She was essentially asking you whether she should consider you attractive or not. Appearance, intelligence, sense of humor, good moral code......those are non-issues.

singpilot 12-02-2005 09:53 AM

She noticed the shoe size, and was wondering if it was worth putting up with that in exchange for the potential holiday bennies.

techweenie 12-02-2005 10:04 AM

Wow, I lived in 90210 for 18 years and never, ever witnessed behavior that raw.

"Thats a rude question" <---- Would be a good response.

Followed by a seres of questions from you along the same lines:

How old are you?

What cup size are you?

Are those real?

ken_xman 12-02-2005 10:15 AM

Maybe she was rich and wanted to do you, and pay you for it.

pwd72s 12-02-2005 10:18 AM

Pretty sick chick...

kach22i 12-02-2005 10:20 AM

What ever you do, don't post her picture.:D

EdT82SC 12-02-2005 10:24 AM

Thom, I think you should go out with her, and tell us all about it. This should be REALLY good. :D

pbs911 12-02-2005 10:25 AM

So what did you tell her? And did you do her?

dtw 12-02-2005 10:32 AM

In Soviet Russia, whore pays YOU

Icemaster 12-02-2005 10:32 AM

This I gotta hear...

At least she didn't ask if you were gay.

techweenie 12-02-2005 10:33 AM

I think it's time to dust this one off for a repost:

How to spot a rich guy

MotoSook 12-02-2005 10:37 AM

What if she just wanted to know a System Engineer's pay scale? How did the rest of the conversation go?

Icemaster 12-02-2005 10:41 AM

The she asks "what's that pay?"

Jeff Higgins 12-02-2005 10:49 AM

Did you have a sausage taped to your leg or something?

singpilot 12-02-2005 10:52 AM

Jeff, that was the shoe size thing.

Jeff Higgins 12-02-2005 11:47 AM

Hey, I'm an old fart that doen't keep up on " shoe sizes." In my day we didn't have all this fancy new-fangled goll durn lingo to keep up with. I have two teenage boys that roll their eyes at me alot; I'm a never ending source of embarasment and amusement to them. But then again, my mom does too, so maybe it's something else...

Oh, I've come across a few of these on my Match adventures.

An ex used to work for a dating service, where they try to match up white men here with some local Chicom expats. The stories were just unreal. Some of the ladies came right out and told my ex that they only wanted a guy with money and US citizenship, fully planning to dump him as soon as the two year probationary green card period was up.

When my current lady got a look at my two 911's, she said I must be rich. I said I'd be rich if I didn't have those cars, but they most definitely keep me poor.

There can be gold diggers and there can be women who want a baby more than anything in the world.

This reminds me of a lunch “date” I had a long, long time ago. I put date in quotes because it was more of an interview than a date. This woman had tunnel vision and there was a baby at the end of the tunnel. She needed to know right away if I was husband/father material. She had a list of questions she asked during the date, including how much I made and what the growth potential for my career was. She fired these questions off interview style, for the duration of the date. I could tell when I got one right and when I got one wrong. I was actually hoping for more wrong answers. I ran, not walked, away from that date.

On another occasion, this time in a group, a woman asked me what my five year plan was. She wanted to hear “married with a baby” as that was here five year plan. When I didn’t answer correctly, I was immediately off her radar. It was like I no longer existed. She focused on other members of the group, completely ignoring me.

Rick Lee 12-02-2005 12:37 PM

Kang, I had one of those once, though it wasn't quite as regimented. She was 39 when I was 32, she was a very successful doctor and in a hurry to get that baby. She loved the Porsche, not so much the guns, but we had fun for a little while. She was so consumed by her career, I don't know why she thought she had time for a kid. Anyway, we didn't last long, but she introduced me to a rich guy, whose drug co. she consulted for and he and I became great friends (he has a fleet of Ferraris and Porsches, so we hit it off right away). I ran into her at his house unexpectedly a year or so later and she looked pregnant, but I was afraid to ask for sure. A few mos. later my friend told me she had a little boy. I asked who the father was and he said she had gotten artificially inseminated!!!! Whew! She really wanted that baby. Glad I got out of that when I did.

People who converse in that style are as rude as someone who pulls their pants down and take a schit on the dinner table. When talk starts to go in that direction, you should give them no consideration whatsoever. Not even the time of day. Seriously.

JavaBrewer 12-02-2005 12:52 PM

I think you're all wrong. The girl at Starbucks was probably sick of her dead end job and was just asking some direct questions. Shoe size, yeah right, even with an "average across the board" girl in her 20s I call BS. This of course is all based on the way Thom describes his appearance - he's not going to be mistaken for someone with money.

vash 12-02-2005 12:58 PM

i am with david on this one.
no biggie. besides guys date for boobs, and ladies date for money..i mean security. you were not gentlemen enough to dress "income aware". so it is all your fault thom :D hot chicks you can spot across the room, they have no visual cue to our earning potential. love is a mean ugly beotch!

scottmandue 12-02-2005 01:07 PM

At first I was going to join in with the "what a rude B****" crowd but then you all started talking about ladies you have dated and it got me thinking.

I'm kind of like Thom, average looking, average income, only thing I got going for me money wise is I own my house (120K mortgage on a 500K house). Although I do have an above average sense of humor (I'm funnier in person than on the BBS... really!).

I have met and dated a few ladies that really enjoy my company and we even share some affection now and then but then I find out they are still on the lookout for a doctor/lawyer/rich guy to hook up with while using me for entertainment.

I would rather a woman be HONEST with me up front that she is only interested in money saving me from wasting my time and getting my feelings hurt down the road.

Also seems a little hypocritical for SOME of you guys to put down on women for going for what they want when you are only interested in women that look like super models.

motion 12-02-2005 01:13 PM

You guys can kindly pass those hot, needy women this way... will pay finder's fee commensurate on level of hotness :D

Rick Lee 12-02-2005 01:19 PM

Motion, this thread would not at all be complete without your input. We need more than just that short post. Tell us some more stories!

Superman 12-02-2005 01:27 PM

Uh, Motion......your harem's not full? Like I said, I'd like to attend one of your parties.

Me? I'm fairly good looking but not tall or large. I'm frighteningly intelligent as you guys all know. I'm fairly confident and patient, and funny. My problem? I'm completely naive. I don't figure out when ladies are coming on to me until hours or days later. I'm quite single now and enjoying that, but probably a sitting duck with a bullseye paited on my chest.

M.D. Holloway 12-02-2005 01:33 PM

should have ax'd her if she swallowed...

vash 12-02-2005 01:43 PM

funny timing. an ex of mine called me up awhile back. we broke up due to the fact that i moved to cali from texas, and to be honest, i didnt think she was going anywhere. hell, i didnt even know her major in college. it changed that often. she tried to move with me, and assumed i would support/marry her. she was hot, and could....do things...with..

anyways, she was having marital issues. apparently after me, she hooked up with a doctor. hispanic guy, they had a kid, and the second kid was on the way. the doctor guy doesnt come home anymore, and is cheating on her. there is danger in both camps. girls get security with guys that hold all the cards, and guys that date hot women can end up with aging not so hot, evil creatures. balance is KEY! i feel bad for my ex. she called me to "talk". i didnt feel bad enough to listen for that long.

Thom, it must be phermones or something. I've been somewhat "on the hunt" for a year or so now, and never a conversation like that. I have had some outright rejections online, but I think it is due to my "complications" (divorce not final and have a kid) rather than other things.

I don't talk to 20-somethings though...I've got too much gray. Well, except for this one barista at Peets. I do chat her up, and I'm guessing she's 25 or so. Never mind...

The current g/f is an odd mix of boheim and world traveler. Doesn't care a hoot about money. Insists on paying at least half of the time. And she isn't rolling in dough. Well, unless her books get a sales spike or she sells a script. But then maybe I'll be toast :p

speeder 12-02-2005 04:03 PM

I think that he was refering to the ability to buy vehicles and take them to the track. It is worthy of admiration.

motion 12-02-2005 04:07 PM

God only knows he wasn't implying that we were good looking... well, except for Jack. Dang, Todd, YOU'VE BEEN PWNED!!!
