The Lottery - Powerball - What a scam!
I love to see people come out of the woodwork to wait in line and buy tickets at their chance to win 365 Million.
My only question remains...why didn't they buy tickets when the jackpot was 50 Million or 100 or whatever? wasn't that enough money for them? it's a feeding frenzy. i don't play because i believe the lottery is another tax for people who can't count. and it's legal fraud, to say the least.... obviously the states take in 40% so it's in their best interest to make the jackpots as large as possible. thank you for reading.

I feel bad for all the people that didn't win.
I will not be among them. Unbridled optimism. Kinda like thinking the Clintons were actually going to accomplish something when they were elected.

LOL, lotteries are a tax on people who are bad at math.
On the other hand, if you DO play your chances of winning are infinitely higher than if you DON'T play.

365 million, over 20 years, after taxes, comes to about $175,000 a week.
That's a lot of cabbage

I used to believe that the lottery was a tax on people who couldn't do the math - until my neighbour won $14,000,000 the second time he played. It does happen.

Personally, I'd rather see 365 people win a million apiece.

He put his house on the market, moved to his condo on Maui - and we haven't heard from him since.

One of my coworkers won $10m in the florida lottery. Still working his job as a AV guy, pusing vcrs and such to classrooms. Bought a house, but not too much, took a 1 week cruise, doing other sensible things like a ton of dental work, etc. but a few fun things too like new bowling balls, etc. but nothing outlandish. He also chose the long term payout - more chances to screw up and blow it all. All depends on the mindset of the person who wins.

If you spend <$20/year on it, what's wrong? You won't screw yourself out of much of anything except a couple hundred miles in the P-car. Or the extra cost of one nice dinner over something at home.
And if you do win, you're set for a good long while if you can manage money and your ego. |

The Cash prize is about equal to 1/2 the 'listed' Annuity prize. So, you win about $175M. After taxes, depending on the state, is a maximun of $114M. The Odds for winning are 146M to 1. So, the reward/risk ratio is still under 1.
The prize needs to be at least $450M for the reward/risk ratio hit 1 I'm waiting til next week...or the week after next...

My boss bought a lottery ticket with the spare change he had left over from buying a golf hat his wife didn't want him to buy. He stopped at the 7-11 and bought a lottery ticket. A few days later he went in again (to get milk or something) and the cashier mentioned his store sold the winning ticket and encouraged my boss to get his. He declined, saying it was in the glove box and he probably didn't win.
Well, he did win. Somewhere between 5 and 10 million. The kicker? His wife didn't want him to buy the hat. It was also one of a hand full of times he bought a ticket. Can't win if you ain't in.
