.
Rumor has it that HP will put out a new ROM for the 6515 to upgrade it to WM5. Most device makers, however, are not issuing new ROM's due to cost of implimentation and that the newer hardware can do more, such as QVGA displays. Plus it seems that all the new radios are much, much better.

Wait till the included media player won't let you play your videos or mp3's because it thinks that you don't have the proper license. Then there's always the possibility of the "treacherous computing" ability turning your computer into an expensive paperweight because it suddenly decided you weren't properly licensed.

Some of it will probably be OK. Other parts I could do without.

Rob, that's why all my media will be staying on an XP or Linux machine. Preferrably the latter. Samba share, and use the media over the network. F that windows license BS.

DRM licks balls.

Ah yes, the view of those who need nothing more from a box, but entertainment.

Trust me, Gates is no dummy. You really have to count in, commercial industry . .. cmptrs that do work are MSFT.

Business will continue to "upgrade" . . .how often do consumers want to buy a new "media center" ?

Wait until profits dry up...business won't upgrade...they'll make due with what they've got. Until MS breaks some software with a bugfix (again).

Apple will be selling the box *and* the mobile device *and* the content. And there are a lot of people out there who need nothing more from the box...like most consumers.

Oh, and those of us who *create* the content too. Geeks aren't the only ones who "really use" computers. And even lots of geeks use Macs...most of the Caltech chemistry department is Mac-based. Seems to me it is the business drones who continue to pledge allegiance to the borg

Hey, I'm not happy about MSFT's hold on business. - it really Suck.

I'm just saying; entertainment is not going to take over the world of computers, and drive all the standards.

MSFT's model is really straight fwd; make it easy to write app's for windows, and you have app's people need . . .long before the tougher standards of say Apple are even understood.

I won't argue that msft has a better (more robust) OS ... they don't. But a great (robust) OS is worthless w/o app's.

We do?

What if I want to agree?

Sure, now it's more important . ..but is it a big deal for msft? --they like to control.

Sorry, but Island911 is clearly right here.

No offense, but Mac users tend to be tech savy, heavy users of media. While entertainment is certainly important, the need for a desktop OS for business will not go away anytime soon. Hell, we go to great lengths to ensure that our internal clients CAN'T get access to entertainment. We pay people to work, no dick around on itunes all day. And as for the apps.....Glenn is right one. Fast and dirty (unfortunately) trumps slow and secure.

Perhaps a more accurate assestment would question why mac and MS have operating systems at all. Thin client baby.......

You're missing the point. What will drive the industry is content delivery, not desktop "work". The desktop OS and computer isn't going away in enterprise, but it is at home. And even in enterprise you'll see traditional concepts going away. There's a reason we (at USC) are moving to counting heads instead of ports. Location-based services don't really have meaning in a desktop world...but they will to users.

But you would think busniess-OS-centric living up near the redmond borg.
