When you're more worried about your kids getting into a good college than how you'll manage to pay for it.

To be truly rich is to be able to buy anything on the planet, without worrying how to pay for it, again and again, until your sick of buying things, and you still don't have to worry about it. Its being at the point where your totally bored by money and anything to do with it and just want your life to mean something. Many rich people, like Bill Gates, are not worried about it as they have defined their role in life and just do not care about money anymore, but the likes of Ted Kennedy, Who have NO purpose in this world, are not really rich, they just have a lot of money and way to much sex and drugs to deal with reality. They try to take their troubles out on the productive members of society, like Bill Gates, and sink them to their low common denominator, of no life skunks.

That's a variation on what a tennis buddy of mine said to me once.
His line was that when he awoke in the morning, his money gave him the freedom to carry out what he had planned to do the day before, or not. He always referred to money as a tool.

A bit about him:
By the age of 40+, he had made all his money on his own...no family money.
He's wealthy, not just rich...wealthy.
Real estate, buying/selling businesses, and the stock market were his vehicles.
'Was divorced when we met, and was searching for a "genuine, personally responsible woman." 'Had concerns about how to keep the knowledge of his wealth from the women he dated. He'd share stories w/me about their line of talk and their ways, etc.

My first clue that he had money:
We met on the tennis courts 25+ yrs. ago, both looking for a hit. Swapped phone numbers afterwards, and began our regular hitting sessions, about 15 hrs./week.
One day he complained about his nylon strings, so I gave him a new set of gut strings out of my bag. 'Suggested that he'd like gut over nylon. A few meetings later, he brought me a box...a beautiful $500 Private Collection Sergio Tacchini warm-up suit...not sold in America. When he saw my stunned reaction, he said that he could afford to reward generosity. After that, we began to talk about money, critical mass, women, what to value in life, death, etc.

The last time he called, he had recently returned from taking one of his 12 bikes down and spending a weekend at Freddie Spencer's High Performance Riding School at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
When I asked about any problems w/other riders, he said that he rented Freddie Spencer, his video crew, and the entire track for his own self for the weekend.

He also said that he wanted to learn trials riding, so he bought a GasGas trials bike, contacted some European trials champion, flew him over to stay with him for a few weeks, and they rode the hills behind his house.

My favorite aspects of him is that he has Humility, but speaks fearlessly straight and w/o pretense...probably what served him well in his accumulation.

On the "LA Traffic" thread here, Zeke spoke of having a barn in the weeds one day...just working on his cars. If I had this fellows wealth, I'd be on my 100+ acres in the woods and would live out my life putzing on my bikes, my vehicles, and my property. Using my money as a tool keep the riff-raff away...to live simply.

So, "What's Rich..."? When I think of what is rich, I think of this fellow. I've met him, I know him.
It's not what he does, but that he can so effortlessly do it.
Speaking of being financially rich, that's it...in my book.

I am the CEO of a nationally known organization....make a couple hundred thou a year, have 2 homes, nice boat, lots of cars, great perks (country club, car, gas, travel etc) unmarried and the kids are finally out the door.....

I love my work but I am about to give this up and strike out into private practice....

I always considered my friend's dad, the one I bought my 944 from, to be rich. 40 years old, his own company, 2 911s, a 100K boat, a nice house that he completely re-did inside. And 2 great kids. He took us everywhere, nice restraunts, track events, shopping. One cool dude.

That's one definition of "rich".

The other would be my sister's old Organic Chem prof. 36 years old, 2 PhDs, a Masters, and a few million dollars in the bank. Said he created a couple drugs (that he couldn't talk about at the time) working for a company (that he couldn't talk about at the time). He took a massive paycut because "God called me to teach".

My other buddy's dad owns a local body shop that does the repair work for a few insurance agencies. He's has 120 acres of very nice hunting land with a nice little house that he hunts deer at, and thinks nothing of spending $2,000 on the latest and greatest bow. Hunting is the one thing he really enjoys in life, and has no problem spending any amount of money on it. He recently returned from an African Safari; he said it was about $20K just to ship his trophies home.

IMO, some of you guys seem pretty darn wealthy. New 911TTs, GT2s, $25K engine rebuilds. I'm going to consider myself "rich" when/if I can ever afford a Ferrari. Being a math major, though, I'm not seeing that happening:-P

And, yea, mede8er, you're a fool:-P Just kidding, if it makes you happy, then that's something money can't replace.*
