Histrionic Personality Disorder

Anyone know anyone who has been treated for this? I think a friend of mine has it.

Pretty crazy stuff.

Sounds like the diagnosis for most of the OT crowd
Quote:
Diagnostic Criteria

A pervasive pattern of excessive emotionality and attention seeking, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by five (or more) of the following:

is uncomfortable in situations in which he or she is not the center of attention
interaction with others is often characterized by inappropriate sexually seductive or provocative behavior
displays rapidly shifting and shallow expression of emotions
consistently uses physical appearance to draw attention to self
has a style of speech that is excessively impressionistic and lacking in detail
shows self-dramatization, theatricality, and exaggerated expression of emotion
is suggestible, i.e., easily influenced by others or circumstances
considers relationships to be more intimate than they actually are

That's just the tip of the iceburg- to know someone with it is draining to say the least. I've come to find out that she has told me maybe 100 things over the last couple of years that aren't even true. Friends dying, inheritence money, etc.

If you know someone who seems to be constantly surrounded by drama, always the victim, and seems overly needy you better check into it.

At least she's getting help now- after faking a suicide attempt!

Carnutzzz,

Your friend may be showing signs of Schizotypal Personality Disorder. A lot like histrionic but with a tenuous relationship with reality, at times.

Part of the reason I left my former wife. Generally speaking I would suggest its a more common trait in women..

I had a female friend like that in college, let's call her "Karen" (real name). She was attractive, but I lost interest in her "that way" after an early rebuff. She invited herself to crash in my room one night. I thought it was all innocent, but she had other ideas...

About a year later, she starts telling me that a mutual male friend has become threatening towards her. I talked to the guy, and it turns out that she was telling him the same thing about me! Me and the guy bought each other a few beers at the bar that night and said forget her...

A month or so later (she lived on the same floor as me in college). My girlfriend (now wife) bursts into my dorm room crying. She demands to know if it's true that I do coke. (I don't nor ever have.) I tell her "no". I asked where she heard this. The answer was no surprise: "Karen".

A week later, Karen stops by my room, closes the door, and explains in a grave tone that she has something very important to tell me. My girlfriend (now wife) was trying to get pregnant by me to trap me into marriage. I had to keep myself from laughing at her--the girlfriend and I hadn't been intimate yet... (8 years later we have no kids and have been married 1½ years.)

Karen moved off the floor that week and I haven't heard from her since. I had been rather unsuccessful in dating the previous two years in college. I came to find out that Karen had taken it upon herself to visit with any girl I was interested in and tell her some vicious rumors about me.

This describes about 250,000 people in Manhattan alone.

Remember that cute girl in the drama department - the last you heard she had moved to New York to become a star..

Quite possible. She hasn't been diagnosed by her Dr. yet, only by my friend who is a psychiatrist and doesn't know her- working from my description of symptoms.

She claims that she has only lied to me, but her family agrees that her stories as of late just haven't been adding up.

Seems that others may know people with similar issues- it apparantly affects 2% of women!

Referring to Histrionic, the 2% figure came from a Dr who treats it.

Yes- I've cut all ties...

Most of that 2% end up in the acting profession.

Every guy in LA makes the mistake of dating an actress sooner or later. Not often twice.

That's actually true. Typically people with this condition will gravitate towards professions where it can help, and not hinder their lifestyle.

Guess what the other profession is?
