rode in a zo6 today!

Yup first ride in a zo6 today! It went like snot. I liked it allot. Now I can say that I have not rode in any late model 911s but man this was cool even if it was chevy.

But after awhile I thought wow it just is not raw enough for me. I get the feeling that no new car would be so even after riding in a 400 HP VETTE I still like my old 77 911 with an81 sc engine in it for the weekend runs.

The Z06 has 500 hp. The standard C-6 Corvette is rated at 400.

The new Corvettes are about as raw as you will get with any new car. The new Porsches are very refined cars. The most engaging new car today is probably the Lotus Elise/Exige.

You nailed it! I put 74K miles on my 99 6 spd hardtop (the light one that was the basis for the first Z06) that was slightly modified to about 375 hp. After a very short time I felt the only "exciting" thing about the car was all the torque.

The car will run circles around the 82 SC coupe I bought when I sold it. The reason I got rid of it was it became just another car in normal everyday driving - unless you stood on it! Rocket launches w/o a feeling of engagement with the vehicle in other driving modes wear thin pretty quick.

It handled well (so do the fatso waterpumper Porsches), but I don't regret for a second "trading down" to an old SC. Even in traffic I at least have the sensation of being under the yellow, just waiting for the green.

ALL driving is fun again in an older Porsche!

BINGO!!! I only put 15K on my 99 hardtop before trading it in. It was a good car and nice to look at but after driving a 93 RX-7 I got bored real fast. I only wish I had bought a Porsche much earlier.

I RODE (road) in my friends Z06 - Very impressive - especially when you consider the price and the light weight!

We guys are a sad group.....

- "road" in a car today...
- replaced the pads on my "breaks".
- "Mobile" oil ( as opposed to the oil that is "nailed down")
- etc....

The "ferriners" do better !!!!.....

I am so happy that I found the key to automotive happiness. No matter what the new car is and what new higher levels of performance the designers have pushed it to......it will be surpassed within 6 months. But the total driving experience available from my old Porsche doesn't fade. It's the same reason I ride Ducatis.

My particular '74 had been undriven for many years when I bought it. On two occasions, different people, who new (knew?) the car from years ago, came up to me and used the same word to describe it. Each essentially said that it was one of the most visceral cars they had ever riden in. I think that really describes it.

Oh yeah! Before the Vette I had a red 93 RX7 R1 - ELECTRIFYING. If it had the durability of Porsche I'd probably still have it.

If you think Porsches are expensive, parts & maintenancewise, get a twin turbo RX7 for a rude awakening along with the electrocution!

LOL!! I have been driving mine for 3 years doing DE's Autocrosses (Scoring FTD's almost everytime out) and basic on road antics. The only maintenance I have done? Oil changes, Fuel Filter change, new spark plugs. Thats it!!

It really does not get any simpler.

At my last track day I overheated it really bad (280°)**. I DROVE it my mechanics Monday and we did a compression check. Yup, compression is low. Pretty sure the seal springs are weakened from all the heat. This major repair will run me around $2000. After 3 problem free and maintenance free years I will happily pay that.

This was during the last session at the track, see how weak my overheated engine is:

I am looking foward to seeing some Z-06's at the track. I have seen a few on the road now and a couple in the paddock at the trac but none on the track.

**overheating was due to a bad underdrive pully setup and a faulty thermostat. I saw my temps were up but was unsure if it was too hot. My water temp guage is very wrong so I was convincing myself it was all o.k. - New guage on the way.
