To go back to the attic vent topic for just a second, have any of you used/seen one of these? It is a solar-powered attic vent. I alread have an attic fan, but I'm thinking about installing two of these (where I have regular vents already) to lower the temp in my attic throughout the day.

For the cost of one solar vent you can have 2-3 standard, thermostatically controled power vents. Not worth the $$$ IMO.

Zeke/Milt, you sell windows. Do you have a particular style or brand that you recommend? Ours are in horrible shape, are ugly, and will be replaced before too long. So I'd love to hear what you have to say.

I don't sell windows, but I have a theory on which ones are best. The big guys, like Anderson or Pella. Why? Because they actually TEST their windows, under all conditions. No matter how well made a window is, unless they do some extensive testing, I can state, with some confidence, that they will be inferior to the cheepest TESTED window. Large scale production will also produce a higher quality window at much lower cost, so again, go with an Anderson, or Pella or Milguard that has a strong productin basis. You can select a standard size that can be fitted to almost any opening with minor carpentry. Get a superior product for minor changes in your window openings.

I agree on the Pella and Anderson advice...there are other good brands though. I think I 've heard that Marvin is another one worth considering.

Be aware that Pella and Anderson have many levels of quality. I've not seen the higher end offering at any of the big box stores.

Florida windows - They have to be tough to meet our hurricane building codes. They have to weather well because of the sun and the salt. Typically even the high end andersons and pellas don't hold up here very well.

I have assorted Pella windows in my house. I have compared the very high end, custom size one in my bathroom to one of their lower end (non replacement type) and they look like they were built the same way, same materials. Less expensive seems to mean std size, color, and no shades built in, but otherwise same good quality.

I work for Simonton Windows. We supply Storm Breaker windows to Florida. they will take a 146 mph impact.
Windows are pulled from the production lines and sent to the test lab every day.

Here is a video clip of some of the test they run on our products.
It shows them launching a 9ft 2x4 at 50ft per sec. into the window from an air Cannon to try to break it. It also demonstrates the wind pressure resistance as well as vacuum. I like to watch them break stuff.

Thats the kind of stuff that counts, actual testing. In most of the country we do not need that kind of protection, but having it is a small price to pay for an excellent window.

For most of the country I would look for testing for wind, leakage, corrosion, that kind of thing. Good uv and sunlight protection are important as well as insulation qualitys.

Here, in CA, windows are not significant, ie, any window is good nuff. I mean, like the climate is always temperate, always between 40 to 80 degrees F. Like any window is ok.

However I would still suggest a quality window from a mainline supplier. Why?? Well they are just nicer and look better. They will also last your lifetime, like you will live in the same place that long.

Hey Steve, I hope you put that scraper to good use already. If you feel like moving up to the 21 century, I can also send you some sand paper

We still use a card scraper at times. Works pretty well too.

I know, this was posted 8 years ago which is about when I mounted one on my garage. Still working flawlessly and silently and doesn't cost a penny to run. Lowers the temp significantly

Nice! And is why I find such tremendous value in searching for previous threads on various subjects here - instead of just starting a new one.

Pretty sure it's the exact same. I bought it so long ago I can't remember where. Could have even been home cheapo. It has exceeded my expectations
