Weed Killer!
 

Ok, I'm fed up with the "over the counter" weed control. I NEED HELP!!!!!! I put in a brick patio and USUALLY I pull the weeds as they come up. But I have two little kids and I'm running out of time for weeding the patio. So I bought some concentrated Round Up and sprayed it twice and SOME of the weeds died, but not all. I even doubled up the mixture. Anyways, I need a good solution for killing these weeds without coloring or staining the bricks. ANY ideas?

Oh, yea! I put down the sand, the gravel , weed barrier, etc...... What's going on is the weed seeds have landed and started growing between the bricks. As you can see here even a flower has started growing. Actually, that is ok cause I kind of like it. But I'm planning on killing that too.....

Did it rain or did you water the area any time after spraying Round-Up?
R/U takes a good 48 hrs. to translocate to the root structure - you may already know that.
Much quicker kill in warm weather/hot sun.

You could add some surfactant (several drops of liquid soap) into your mix as a sticker agent.
But R/U does have some already.

A pre-emergent weed agent will stop new seedlings from germinating.
Ronstar G is a broad spectrum granular agent sold to the commercial industry.
Put it down as per label (salt 'n pepper) and water in immediately.
It's used on grass as well, so no fear for your turf.
It's the best, IMO. I have two 40# bags in my garage - I use it all the time...large lot, ya know.

What are you doing wrong?

Maybe you're R/U kill is good but seedlings are still pushing - ya think?
In that case, just keep spraying them until no more seedlings, OR get some pre-emergent.

Bill, you need some pre-emergent weed agent.

Edit: Nice patio.

Pick up some Ortho "Ground Clear" and a pump-up sprayer. Just be sure spray it on a non-windy day, and keep it away from the grass!

I'm not familiar with homeowner/consumer products - only commercial stuff.
If Ortho "Ground Clear" is any kind of sterilent, it could leach under and along the edge of your patio and kill grass roots.

'Could call your local nursery to see what they offer given your situation.

THANKS! I like the patio, but I don't like these weeds! If I was to do it all over again I would do the stamped concrete. Oh well, it's too late now.

The first time I applied the concentrate it rained that night. The second time I applied it it rained the second night but killed some weeds. I'll wait till I know it's gonna be dry for a few days and add some liquid soap to make it stick and try again. If it doesn't work the third time then I'll try something different like the Ortho or Ronstar G with/or something with pre-emergent as mentioned.

I could almost care less. Most of my grass is "overgrowing" the paito anyways. If it doesn't kill my entire yard with a small dose then I would try it.....

A goat on a rope ought to do it. :cool:

I thought about it, but the wife wasn't really down with the idea. The kids loved the idea though!!

How is that possible? You spray straight Round Up on those puppys, they should be DOA. I think the comments above about rain are correct. Make sure it has time to sink in. You will see the effects after a day or so, but it takes a solid week for them to really die off.

I don't know! That's what I said. I bought the concentrated RU so I have to mix it with 1gallon of water. It says 6oz to one gallon, but I used 7 the second time. When I try it again I'll go 10-12 oz/gallon with some dish soap to make it stick. I'll also wait for a few nice days to make sure it has time to sit there a while.

I think the problem you raninto was the rain after application. I use Roundup and it works great. This weekend would be a good time to apply, like this morning. Just keep the kids and cat off it for ,I think, 24 hours and it should be ok.

What others have said... In my experience, the subsequent rains have caused the Roundup to be ineffective, and sometimes it takes a week or so to completely kill the weeds.

At a mere $3.00 per gallon, this stuff is cheaper and MUCH more effective than RoundUp...and is practically guaranteed to work after the very first application! ;)

Just use a propane torch. Kills the weed, kills the seed.

Ethylene glycol (anti-freeze) is a great weed killer with long lasting effects. However, I don't recommend it's use around children and pets. Toxic and sweet tasting.
