The article makes a good point, Americans want things clean and easy. This attitude pervades our society, it isn't just about our reaction to war. We expect that our technology and economic might will allow us to easily overcome anything. Examples:

Medical: People think that everything is curable. Medical technology can find and fix any malady. God forbid someone should die from their disease...time to run to the lawyer because somebody must have messed up. People don't die from diseases these days...

Katrina: One the the largest hurricanes to hit the US in the last 50 years. Somehow everyone thinks that we should be able to whisk tens of thousands of people out of a flooded city in the blink of an eye. Contrast our Katrina response to the Indian response to their earthquake where tens of thousands have died and they STILL cannot get to many areas.

Unfortunately Americans (this one included) have grown fat and lazy. We are victims of our own success.

Overweight?? Man, that's gotta be glandular. Better get some pills to lose that weight, you sure don't want to try diet and exercise. Of course the lawyers will be there to sue the drug company if it turns out that medication might have had some side effects...

Poor? Well, you are just a victim of a society that keeps you down. Never mind that opportunities for financial success are greater in the US than anywhere else in the world. The government's gotta bail you out since it obviously isn't your responsibility that you haven't succeeded in the land of opportunity.

The list goes on and on...

What Rick said. It's saying that baby boomers and later are spoiled by technology and quick solutions - to everything. The article also implies that we believe we are guaranteed a painless existence, and we believe we are OWED this. Our present internal turmoil over the war is just one symptom.

I have to agree. It seems that there are a lot of people who carry the attitude of entitlement these days, and even more who seem to think it's acceptable behaviour from an adult. Blame the environment, blame the government, blame a medical condition, just blame someone or something for your shortcomings.

Frankly, it's sickening and embarrassing, seeing grown men who can't seem to solve their own problems or "get dirty" time to time.

You guessed it, self - reliance is becoming an endangered species. Frankly I piss on those types when I meet them.

Edited - Matt retracted his comment.

Not the way I read it. It says we're over-educated and accustomed to lack of challenge. We're smug and have forgotten the hard work it was to build this. We are also too quick to blame the upper management. The article was not defending Bush, it was criticizing the average citizens smug attitude of -"Ugh, it's supposed to be perfect"

It says we look down on our past history - as if our predecessors were less educated - and therefore incorrect in their handling of things.

In other words, stop complaining and do something about it. *****ing about "how it ought to be" really doesn't account for much - it's just talk.

I can understand the frustration you might have with people like that, but if we can't trust/expect our government (by and for the people) to make somewhat decent decisions for us then maybe we need to appoint a King and not a President and forget that America ever existed. We expect the best in here, its what makes us great. When we start settling for what we've got we might as well dissolve the Union because what would be the point?

Yeah, on second read it was too long winded and uninteresting, not good enough so I dumped it and started again.

Actually, we see our job more as "preventing war." It worked for almost 30 years....but after eight years of Clinton enabling of our enemies....we were doomed to have to clean up his mess.

I respect my Father more than any man on earth - living or dead. He was a decorated WWII infantry solder wounded during the Battle of the Bulge. He spent 36 years with Underwater Warfare. He was and still is a conservative Republican. At 82 he now is of the opinion that this war is a mistake and for that matter all war is a mistake. People should try what ever means possible to avoid it at all costs. Life is too precious - all life.

I was always pro-war. I am starting to understand his point of view and I think my mind may be changing.

I wish folks like you father were running things instead of our 'gung ho, macho' politicians. IMO, Iraq, relative to 'real' threats to the US (both currently and during my lifetime), was not even on the radar. It WAS a 'war of choice' as we could have kept Sadaam penned down for years (or forever) at a much lessor cost...

Ronnin, you're still not trying to tie Iraq to 9/11 are you?

I'm only trying to find out who thinks the US is a battleground ?

That issue will color all remarks imo.

Were we attacked on 9/11, thus making the US a battleground... absolutely. Was I FOR going after the culprits in Afghanistan... absolutely. Was I FOR 'choosing' to attack Iraq (while letting the real enemy regroup) and ultimately putting in place a government that is/will be more closely aligned with the terrorists (who attacked us) than Sadaam ever was....NO!
