You say it's not racist, but...

It's been over two weeks since the demonstrations against the proposed new immigrations law, and more than a month since this topic has gotten hot again.

We've had people talking about fences, 'English language' rules and even shooting people coming here to work.

...but nobody seems upset about the Canadian border.

It's more porous by far than the Mexican border, according to some, and many thousands -- maybe tens of thousands cross illegally. Lots of firearms and drug trafficking takes place there. Plus, there are lots of stories of Canadians coming here for our hospital services.

Where is the outrage?

you are such a hoser

Rikao4 05-19-2006 09:15 AM

Canadian pot is supposedly much better than the crap coming out of Mexico. If we are importing, let it be quality.

May I quote a comedian?
"they are polite, they look like us, and they speak our language".

BlueSkyJaunte 05-19-2006 09:33 AM

Next time a bunch of Canadians shoot up the freeway near my house, let me know. Then I'll get all riled up.

thousands < millions, they go back more often, and contribute more when they stay. Let's fix the huge hole, then worry about the tiny ones next.

speeder 05-19-2006 09:38 AM

They must blend in extremely well or be invisible to the census, because I have never read about a population increase of 1 single person due to illegal immigration from Canada.

Across the Mexican border it is 750k a month, plus a large percentage of those set up permanent camp here and quickly become pregnant. Are you serious, or just suffering from some form of cognizant disconnect or delusion from siding w/ La Raza on this issue?

nostatic 05-19-2006 09:40 AM

anyone else hungry for moose tacos?

Christien 05-19-2006 09:40 AM

Actually, if I'm not mistaken, it's as much of a problem coming the other way, which is to say it's not really a problem in either direction. Mexicans enter the US illegally to get jobs paid in a currency much stronger than their own. There's not the same disparity between US and CDN currency (and the gap is closing day by day), and there's not the shortage of jobs here that you find in Mexico. Those that leave Canada for the US for vocational reasons are doing so for higher pay. These are (mostly) doctors and other professionals, not fruit pickers.

And yes, Canadians go south for health care, but they pay for it. It's not like they're taking advantage of the US health system. If anything, they're benefitting it.

Mulhollanddose 05-19-2006 09:44 AM

Comparing the Mexican invasion with Canadians?....Ridiculous....Diversionary smoke screen.

You deal with the Mexican (primary) problem effectively, you end up controlling the secondary immigration problems.

gaijindabe 05-19-2006 09:50 AM

Firearms? Please. Drugs? A little weed. The comparison is plain silly. Healthcare? Their healthcare system pays good money or they pay out of pocket.

In fact with comprehensive reform - we might allow more talented, educated and English speaking people from Canada to immigrate legally.

nostatic 05-19-2006 09:54 AM

ok, how about a caribou burrito?

The southern border is where the dam is broken. When a dam is broken, you don't worry about the other dams that are not broken, before you fix the one that is.

nostatic 05-19-2006 10:20 AM

Bob and Doug McKenzie have done more damage to this country than all the mexicans combined. It isn't the quantity, it's the depth of the damage.

Let's do a fence on the north too! And enslave the canadians to build it! Semper Fudge!

pmajka 05-19-2006 10:20 AM

Yeah, yoor such a Knob, Eh!?

Don Plumley 05-19-2006 10:22 AM

The best reason to put up a wall with Canada? Two words: Celine Dion

There's a South Park episode showing a sign at the Canadian Border: "Welcome to Canada. Now Celine Dion Free."

Mul, you want a conspiracy theory to burn a few brain cycles on: The influx of Canadians on Hollywood. Are the Canadians responsible for the liberalization of Entertainment causing the erosion of US moral values? Enjoy.

speeder 05-19-2006 10:25 AM

I am from Minnesota, and we own vacation property WAY up north, (Lake Superior), and I have never seen a bunch of Canadians in ear-flap hats standing outside of a Home Depot up there flagging cars for work. Like I said, they must blend in awfully well.

speeder 05-19-2006 10:30 AM

And how do you feel about this problem, Tech? (It is a huge reason why I want immigration law enforced, but not the only reason). Of course it's from a racist, right-wing source:
