When I was 12, I saw the film Memphis Belle in the theater, and then shortly thereafter saw the real Memphis belle at an airshow here in RI. It blew my mind.

Saw the CAF 17 many years ago here in CO, but, my memory says it was olive at the time, not polished metal. Also, then, there were only 2 or 3 flyable 17's, so the number is increasing.

Also, there was a B-29 here, and I think, it was the ONLY flyable 29 in existance, at the time.

Made the mistake of standing under the engine of a P-38 (White Lightnin' ?) after it's flyby. Never did get the oil stain out of that shirt. :)

That B17 will be on dislpay at Centennial airport over the weekend. There was a notice in the paper today, I think $6 to take the tour, they will be flying a couple times a day I think.

My Uncle (Grandfather's brother) was a 1st Lt., Bombadier on a B17 over Europe. His plane took a flack hit during a low flying mission and he had to bail. He was captured and coincidentally his brother (my other Uncle who was in the infantry) was in the same POW camp! They both survived. The Uncle who was in the infantry is still alive, but the bomber died last year! I'm always amazed at how those boys flew those things...

When I spoke to the docent at the Evergreen Museum, she said that the B-17G they had was not in flight ready condition due to stress cracks in the wing spars. Something about it being too much time or money to fix at the present.
