China and India are known for this type of thing. As long as we buy the product they will do all they can to produce it.

Foxconn aka Hon Hai is one of the largest contract mfgs of PCs and consumer electronics. If they are doing this for iPods, they are doing this for pretty much every electronic gadget we buy. It is almost certainly not Apple-specific.
China is slowly but surely facing rising labor costs. Mfg's are already looking to move production to lower-cost countries.
