Led Zep greatest band ever?
I'll admit that I've never been a massive Led Zep fan...I always considered Jimmy Page to write great hooks but preferred Clapton or Hendrix or Allman or Beck for pure guitar playing. But I was searching through my library for a tune that stuck in my head (The Rover...why is it that I know every Led Zep song but don't know any of the titles?!?), and was just shocked by how many great, memorable songs they created. Maybe its just because growing up in San Diego in the 70's they were on the radio in heavy rotation, but I have the boxed set (4 discs) and damned if pretty much *every* song on there got airplay and has a totally great riff. I don't know of any other band with that kind of reach. The Beatles maybe, but that was a slightly different era...
Am I off-base? |

Have to add the Stones and The Who into the mix as well...

Gotta agree - do you have "how the west was won"?

I don't think the Doors have nearly the scope/breadth of Zep. Stones? Yeah...they are in the same boat as Zep...insane number of songs that are part of the pop/rock musical fabric. As much as I love the Who, I wouldn't put them quite in the same league. Their stuff is great (and Townsend is a genius), but I can't list 30 or 40 Who songs that most anyone my age could hum or play air guitar to.

Bring it on home. If you had to define rock n roll with only one song that'd be it.

Zep is #1...for one reason, the same reason Beethoven and Mozart are timeless -- pure inspiration.
Floyd similarly, more cerebrally as opposed to viscerally. |

+1 to everything said by everyone above.
Couldn't agree more with Billy Corgan's quote at the end of this video. Greatest Band Ever? Nostatic, treat yourself to How the West Was Won as well as the DVD that came out at the same time. You'll find your not off-base at all. Last edited by Sarc; 07-08-2006 at 08:37 PM.. |

I'll agree the doors don't have the scope - but in a drug induced sort of way they are inspired.
Zep rocks on so many levels though.

One of the advantages of being old is having gone through the 60's and 70's and I saw Led Zepplin in Hampton Roads VA in 1970 (I think) and they were awsome! When I came out of the concert I could not hear my old BSA A10 motercycle run when I started up my ears were so whacked! The second best was Iron Butteryfly about the same time and they had some good lights and effects to make things more surreal. Sadly I have never got to a Pink Floyd concert and maybe never will now.

saw ALL the great geezers in concert back in the day. Zep, Pink Floyd, Moody Blues,Airplane. But I don't think anyone has yet to equal Ian Anderson as a showman , especially when doing his themed concerts. A Passion Play was simply incredible. I agree that Zep is prolly the best rocker ever but must say I can't stand to listen to Stairway anymore. Just way too overplayed.

I'm a very big led zep fan, but IMO they cannot hold a candle to the beatles.
Neither can any other rock and roll band in history. The beatles changed the world, led zep did not. |

I do agree with Flatbutt1, Ian Anderson is a great showman. Saw Tull for my second time last year. Wish they would tour more often. |
