What is shooting lane etiquette?

What is shooting lane etiquette? The shooter to the left of me had shells ejecting directly on me. The shells flew over the barrier. I suppose I could have asked the shooter to adjust his position to keep his shells in his lane. I know he was not aware of what was happeing. I also realize that some guns eject shells with a lot of energy and they can go any direction.

So I wonder…should a shooter be more conscious of the person in the next lane and control his ejecting shells? Or is this just how life is at the shooting range and everyone just lives with errand shells flying anywhere?

Were you at Firing Line? I've had my shells go into the next lane there...wasn't much I could do. I knew it was happening, tried to adjust my position as well as the separator, but it just isn't high enough to block them. I apologized to the guy in the next lane, but short of not shooting I'm not sure what else I could do.

So, the lanes aren't fully ceiling to floor? Change lanes then. My guns always seem to eject so the shells land hot on my head, or in one instance, flew down my shirt.

Move to the lane on his left and pelt him with hot brass. Or, just try to shoot while he is reloading or taking a break.

Randy, you probably need to adjust your ejector and/or replace your recoil spring. Your brass shouldnt be landing that close to you.

I forgot to mention, I'm southpaw. means I'll never be able to enjoy a Sig as a carry gun

Yes, I shoot at the Firing Line indoor range in Burbank. The lanes are tight and separated by a small floor to ceiling wall about 2 feet wide, with about a 2 x 2 foot panel extending down the range. The shells will fly over the panel with some guns. I believe it is hard to avoid. But if you adjust your position you can get the shells to eject onto the short wall and out of the next lane.

Nostatic, it’s nice that you addressed this to the shooter next to you. I’ve never had anybody do that for me. That’s why I was wondering if it is OK to say something to someone.

Generally I just deal with it. I usually wear a hat when I shoot. If the range is not crowded I will change lanes.

Thanks…

Oh, okay. Lefties really get the shaft in this hobby, but I still don't think your brass should be landing on you. How many rounds through your blaster on that spring? If more than 2k, Id replace it.

Shell casing don't bother me. Cases from my own gun bounce off the wall and hit me.

What bugs me is when the joker next to me starts lighting off with his .44 snub. A bit to much violence going on next door for my taste.....

shoot a bigger gun than lane next to you.............and shoot it often! that will clear them out! hahahaha try a dual magna-ported smith wesson 6" stainless .44 mag w/federal 240 grain hydra-shoks! aside from blowing up overhanging roof tiles, if barrel not out far enough forward, it kicks up quite a bit of ground dust ............besides one hell of a lot of noise and flame! usually have about 4 lanes clear out asap on each side of me! lots of fun but my hand hurts after a 100 rds! oh well the price you pay for the big juans!

I think it is appropriate for you to ask him to adjust position.

My Sig pitches shells with great enthusiasm. Our range is outdoors and there is just a support pillar between each shooter. I line up so I'm beside the pillar. The shells fling out, hit the pillar, and roll to the ground somewhere around me.

A couple of friends and I were out shooting and on that day the range was completely full. I happened to be the only woman there...

One of my shells hit the pillar and went straight down my shirt becoming lodged between my bra and my hooter. And oh boy was it HOT HOT HOT!!!

Man I'll tell you what, a red-headed woman jumping up and down with a loaded gun and a hot shell on her hooter can flat clear out a public firing range...

You're probably "limp wristing" somewhat. Try to lock-up your wrist and arm muscles when firing.

This stuff is why it's always good to wear glasses and a baseball hat when shooting. When I use 180gr. loads in my .44 mag., that has a way of clearing folks out. Charles, 180gr. makes 240gr. sound like a cap gun. The NRA Range is about as nice as they come though and I never get hit with others' brass.

rick will try some 180 grains next trip to ben avery range. we should know here in arizona any day if any of us get drawn for hunting this year. if we do, dependant on what species, thats when the shooting starts every scout trip. general drill is go scouting for critters, then on sunday, back at camp set up targets, and let the lead fly big time. its always fun to place bets with .308 rifles. hand unsuspecting shooter a .308 with GI 147grain FMJ bullet. let him miss the target, then while he is shooting load clip up with federal 168 grain boat tail hollow point match rounds, and then drill the target into submission! have gotten alot of laughs out of that! especially when you use someone elses rifle that they feel they are very good with!!!! LOL!

about the only thing that has bothered us as far as throwing brass has been the full auto guys. and most of them usually bring a clear plexiglass barrier with them. sometimes it is unnerving when the guy next to you is shooting an M-60!
