I hate grass, unless it's the 3ft tall ornamaental stuff.
Oh, haha, astroturf!!! Is this a complete teardown? All those houses look the same and the mobile home parking is gone. Where to sip margaritas and smell effervescence?

The Landscaper said that REAL grass would not work there...block wall footing and drainage pipe was to close to the surface for real grass to grow there....so a friend of mine is a Distributer Rep and got me a deal on the fake stuff....which for me is better since it doesn't need mowing, edging, watering, fertilizing nor have yellow spots from the dog peeing on it...
I want LOW to NO maintence...

"I want LOW to NO maintence..." -oh yeah, baby.
Put in an addition overhang for the hammock and a patch of cactii/flowering plants surrounding it. Palm in the far corner or someplace for the dog to rest.

Nice and dry. Here in NZ it's been an ars* of a winter. Usually it's very mild and you can get away with jeans and t-shirt or on a bad day add a sweat shirt.
Where is the BBQ? And how have the steaks been? |

I put Sand at the far end of the yard, not only as a place for the dog to do her biz, but also for a future Pool. If you notice I have a piece of copper pipe protuding from the ground at the edge of the fake grass...that is for a autofiller for a pool. Also I have a main water line, electrical conduit and gas line all stubbed out at the far end of the yard. So all I have to do is dig the hole, get a Plumber, Rebar Man, Gunite Man, Tile man, Plaster and Electrician to finish the job. Oh yeah Mason to build a 4 foot high block wall around the Pool equipment at the far end of the yard and have the Landscaper come back and put a few plants and a Palo Verde Tree in.

Dogs like a bit of shade/hiding to do the 'biz. That area has to be very dry or "organically" active or there will be buildup/etc.
Put the pool closer and leave some room to grow.

Dry is the operative word...leave the #2 out and in a few hours its hard as a rock. After awhile it fossilizes and turns white.

The front yard cactus appears to be quite happy, tabs. Do you stroke it a lot?

Theodore - I hear there were some very bad lightening strikes in Vegas today. Authorities were evacuating residents because of fires. How'd you fair through the storms?

Gee Tabs, I would have thought you would have something a bit more extravagant
That back yard is claustrophobic...but whatever floats yer boat. The fake carpet just about 'Vegas' as it comes.

I never intended to stay in this house forever, and the depth of the Backyard was the thing that I didn't like. However I don't need a larger yard, as a cost to maintain and cost of planting something. In the summer I never even go out there..its tooooooo HOT

I have a 11,000 sq ft lot, with about 20 to 30 ft between houses (all 1 story homes 3000 to 4000 sq ft wt a few 2200 sq ft home on the smaller lots). I would say in my price range 1/2 acre lots are pretty desirable. You can build almost anykind of pool and or Casita/extra garage on a larger lot.
It takes more money to landscape and more maintence for the bigger lots, and in the summer time who is going to be out there to use it in the heat? My last home had a 1/2 acre lot and I got tired of all the maintence, as a single person all I need is what I have now...it would be nice if I had a view of something when I looked out the back to give the illusion of a bigger yard. I planted 2 fruit trees in the back which are not pictured....Lemon and Peach..
