Miami -- Where to Live?????
For those in Miami, where would you send/let your single daughter live??? My 25 year old daughter is moving to the Miami area to attend school for a year at the Miami-Dade college near Homestead. She's learning to become an air traffic controller, and since she already has a a degree, only will be at school 3 times a week. So, question is, she's willing to drive 30-40 minutes to get to school, but wants a nice, safe place to live.

Hmmm... Budget for apertment?
There are a lot of unknowns here. Will she gravitate towards the nightlife that lasts until 6 a.m. or will she behave? Traffic in Miami is hellish. Think outside the box, maybe a small place in Key Largo? (*edit* typed Biscayne initially and meant Largo. ) Away from the crime and in the middle of paradise. The only risk there is the lack of anything to do but drink. Most locals are heavy drinkers. But if I had to choose thats where I would be.

If she'll be at Homestead, find a place in Doral (west Miami). Very residential area (not a lot of places to party...).

I don't know about Miami but in Orlando $700.00 a month gets you a nice refrigerator box. Good luck.

$700/mo = 3 or 4 roommates in a townhome
$700/mo = herself in a crackhouse |

North Broward or South Palm Beach counties and a reliable car with a cell phone, OnStar, and a 9mm.

Key Largo is a short drive south from Homestead and is a different world. Its the Keys not Miami. When ever we do back to back DE's at Homestead Raceway we drive down to Key Largo for dinner. I hate Florida City. I forgot about the apartments near the race track they appear to be really nice and the area is nice as well, but I would check it out, especially in the evening, daytime appearances sometimes change drastically at night. Its amazing what some landscaping will do for an apartment complex.

They have to have some campus apts nearby. My cousin lives in Miami and had a really nice place but I couldn't tell you where. Anything outside of South Beach didn't look safe IMHO except near the aquarium in which the area seemed quite nice. I second the roommate idea.

Yes, a roommate would make me feel better as well...but she did the roommate thing while working on her BA and got tired of it. She'd rather have a 400 sq ft studio, than a roommate in a nice larger house. Go figure.

An important question is does she speak Spanish? In some areas this will matter.
I moved here in January, and here is what I can offer you. Miami Beach looks great on tv, and its fun, but still has quite a seedy underside. I'd have to vote against it for your daughter. Doral is a good option. Miramar has some nice family-style areas too. From what I know, Hialeah is a mixed bag, but I would probably steer clear of it. Homestead and the surrounding areas are good too. The suggestions of North Broward are valid, but thats quite a long drive to school (think over an hour at least). Most importantly, I would not rent anything down here sight unseen. |

I will tell you this, the controllers hired after the strike, and the few who remained on duty during it, are all retiring over the next two years so there is a huge vacancy in these jobs coming up, or already in existence. They pay quite well too. I have many friends in this field. |

Try to stay in Dade County if possible. Coconut Grove and Coral Gables are nice areas and near Homestead.
Apartment complexes are really a mixed bag no matter where you go. The Spanish speaking neighborhoods are not the ones you have to worry about. The real problem are the Hatian communities. For perspective, I live in Palm Beach and it takes 1:15 to get to downtown Maimi. About another 15-20 to get to the U of M with traffic.

Miami in itself is not the safest place. Stay away from North Miami all together. I would suggest Arvida. Just off of I-75. About a 45 min commute. But it is pricey. |

I don't live there but I have to watch the Miami news and that is enough for me to know I would NEVER live there. Too much crime and hate. That being said, I have a good friend who's daughter lives in South Beach. She loves it and we have been there to visit and had a ball. How attuned is your daughter to questionable areas/people? Like any large city, Miami is rough in some areas but perfectably liveable with good sense.
Oh yea, it is EXPENSIVE; one of the most expensive housing markets in the country for rentals. $700 a month is going to be next to impossible.
