Another Jazz Great gone home.

Maynard Ferguson died last night in Ojai.

he was ok, but couldn't really play in the upper registers

Sick player and a great bandleader. They're slowly falling away. Luckily there are at least a few young guns coming along. Saw Chris Botti open for EW&F last Friday, and he is a great trumpet player.

Maynard Ferguson is responsible for inspiring more young trumpet players than almost anyone in history. Despite his fame, he routinely played in high-schools and made himself available to students. I was a Maynard Ferguson junkie back in high-school. No one could play "Chameleon" like him.

This is heartbreaking news. He was one of a kind.

Truly sad. I can remember playing many of his charts back in the mid-70's right after the "Live At Jimmy's" LP...What a true great, and he would do ANYTHING to help young musicians and bands.
