Heck yeah...at least still pics and a reporting. Gotta get my money's worth....the $25 I've pledged. Doherty? Prejudging? I think I'm qualified to do so. I've owned a 2.4 911S for more than 3 decades. Quite possibly the best UNrestored one left. I know the car pretty well. A stock 2.4 S, which was what this car presented as in the ebay ad, is simply not capable of 165 mph, nor will one rountinely rev to 8,500 without suffering big time....

What I was meaning was you never know what really has been done to the car. Nothing personal, The mythbusters have been called and it would be fair to wait on the "plausable" or "busted" verdict.

I see many unsubscribing. This post is to subscribe.
I think/hope it is possable to get 8500rpm. It says something about our cars right? a 72' sports car screeming at modern ferrari engine speeds? I love it! I can't wait to here how it all turns out. Please, someone bring a video camera! Execmalibu, have one strapped into the car showing the tach clearly.
I think the best thing for you to get all the C notes is to do one run with a witness and video camera after you collect the bills then show the video and the deal is done. Then you can take everyone who lost /won the 100 bill for a ride, if the car still turns over. I expect a video posted on U-tube! Yeah!

I see you're in Vegas? Maybe a sports betting palace there would like to get in on the action?

As long as it's done in a legal way, maybe it will be done.

2 things you guys have to bring.

1. A radar gun to prove or disprove it.
2. The video camera to tape it when he rolls it into a ball and then we can all watch it on Jackass III.

For those of us too busy writing long posts about aluminum wings to read all 20 pages of this, could someone clarify what's going to be demonstrated? I saw that it involves the OTR event on November 15th, which I'll be at.

Is the car going to rev to 8500 rpms?
Is the car going to go 165 mph?

I'll offer my portable GPS to measure top speed -- although it's unclear to me how you'd get any car up to 165 at Willow.

Someone summarize the specifics of the challenge, okay?

the bet it this guy with his car that he used to go 165 in.....back in the day.....can rev up to 8500 tru the first couple gears

there are some other bets in the form like i can beat 930 Turbos and whatnot but as of now he is just attempting the well over 8 grand revs around the track

winner gets 100 bucks

Just wanted you to know that I have now spent more than an hour reading the whole thread. It´s almost 4 am here in Sweden. I have the night shift and when I left the ER more than one hour ago to get a quick cup of coffee, the waiting room was full of kids.

Just a quick check-in on Pelican...

Uups, there´s the beeper again. Got to run. Looking forward to the 15th of November. Good show !

Tsuter and others, with all due respect, you should relax, what are you so worried about? You think it's possable you might not look so smart after the 15th? I mean really, are you worried about that? You have talked about him back peddling but you should reread your posts. This is all fun and I think some of us get a little bent out of shape too much. There are a lot of posters that act like Mr. Malabu has stolen their first born.
Hush little baby don't say a word, momies gonna buy you a yellow bird, and if that yellow bird don't sing to 8500rpms, DADDIES GONNA LAUGH!!!!!!!!!

Wink

Its not just 8500 he claimed........

Here is EXACTLY what he said...

"1973 "S" CAR, EARLY 1973 "S" ENGINE ... I DO KNOW THIS ENGINE RUNS AMAZINGLY STRONG!.. THE ENGINE PULLS VERY HARD PAST 8,500+ RPM WITH NO PROBLEM! (YES PAST THE HIGHEST 8,000 RPM MARK ON THE TACH!).. THE ENGINE DOES HAVE THE ORIGINAL MECHANICAL INJECTION (MFI) WITH 013 PUMP... THE SHORT GEARED (HILL CLIMB RATIOS) 915 TRANSMISSION SHIFTS GREAT AND HAS THE RS LIMITED SLIP !...

..... ASK SOME OF THE OTHER LUNATICS THAT HAVE BEEN ON SOME OF THE LOCAL PORSCHE AND "R" GROUPE EVENTS WITH ME... THEY HAVE SEEN THIS CAR RUN AT OVER 165 MPH! AND HAVE SEEN THIS CAR OUT RUN 930 TURBOS AND OTHER RS TYPE CARS 0-100+ MPH.. PLUS REMEMBER IT IS A TARGA!...

Read it HERE:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1973-PORSCHE-911S-TARGA-SPORT-SEATS-RARE-%20%20OPTIONS_W0QQitemZ140038266026QQihZ004QQcateg oryZ10156QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

He went on to say that this amazing 165mph + feat was done WITHOUT the Targa top and presumably with the same short gearing!! All while outrunning Turbos and RS Types to 100+

The backpedaling is now a couple bursts to 8500 I guess....

Muahhahahaaha!

Its not just 8500 he claimed........

Here is EXACTLY what he said...

Tsuter,

I know, I read the whole thing and saw the ebay listing before this post started. I admit, it seems a little off, and maybe it is, but maybe not. I mean, I wans't there, and I have seen my audi 200 20v fold the mirrors back at over 165 mph! Did it actually go that fast? No, the gearbox limited it to 155MPH, but holy sh..! And with less 300 hp and more weight.
I remember a credable post pages back say that the 5th gear would be fine for 165 at under 8500 rpms. So what do I know? I'll tell you exactly what I know. I know it will be interesting to see the outcome of all this. And lets not forget, this guy didn't claim your car will not do what you know it will. He is stating what he says he saw his car do. Where is the harm there? We are not in middle school. If you don't have anything nice to say, well, you know. By the way, he listed the car the way he likes, did you think it seemed realistic? Did you want to warn others or what? I'm still trying to figure out why all the anger.

Plus, I would not recomend taking anything not caged to 165 just for a bet. It takes a just right moment to get that oppertunity unless you have like 500 hp. I did it 11 years ago and not since as I have grown up since then. Will I ever do it again? I'll never tell, I do like the rush but don't like to die, well see.
It's retarded to expect him to agree to proove the top speed at a track that doesn't have a long enough straight. And did you think it would be reasonable to ask him too? Come on.

No the current bet is that the car will pull strong to 8500 rpm first three gears....
And that he could beat a stock 930 0-80 mph which would be 3 gears.

No more than that...
The 165 was not going to happen because, we are not that young and stupid anymore

The other stuff that was claimed, was a claim of what the car did before.
Naturally the forum stuff just took off like out of control "track talk"...
Which is pure fun and entertainment....I have really enjoyed this thread..
