NFW, Pat. I just left VA earlier this year. Something about 3 hours/day of commuting vs. my current situation...walking 15 minutes to my office. I can complain, but I know it's my own choice to move here that's curtailed my freedoms, ahem, for now.

I still see no logic in the lack of representation for District residents. Maybe the Fed's should be prevented from taxing us.

Anecdotally, about 12 or so years ago I went to the local Chevy dealership in Hayward, CA where I lived at the time to check out a pickup truck. The sales manager, a black man in his mid to late 50's, went with me and we struck up a conversation because he was a fellow southerner. He had arrived in the Bay area via the Navy long ago and remained. I asked him how he liked it all those years, and he said, "well, I'm retiring in about a year and taking my wife and returning to Alabama where I grew up." I aked why, and he says, "well, I just barely got into a house here, I have 20 acres there, and will be building a retirement home on it." I said I understand, perfectly, and that was in fact the seeds for my relocation plans to here.
Pat,
My atta boy was not at all about your inclusion of Blacks but about agreeing, seemingly, on only land owners voting. If that's too radical for many...it would be ;-)...I would think that restricting voting rights to only those who are NOT on the Dole in one way or another. They can and do vote themselves largesse.

I am sort of familiar with NC and surely Va.. I almost chose to move to NC back in the early 90's...love it there and am a Southerner at heart. Too many people these days still see the South as entirely racist which is surely is not. I married a Ca. gal a few years back and moving to the South would be out of the question....so we remain in Grass Valley...and love the South from afar. If we sold our nice home here I can almost imagine what we could buy in one of the Carolinas. Congrats on your move.

I could agree with that, no taxation without representation et al.

Still, the District was never intended to have resitence, so was never set up for that.

I never tell anyone what their business should be or how to do it, but if you're dependent on what goes on in the district, change that now, not later.

Interesting, my wife is a Californian by blood and by culture. She's doing well here, although still adjusting to less money per hour worked. We expected that, so no surprise.

She's adopted several connections here, the "Southern Tea Society" being one. You can imagine what that is.

I'm planting grapes this spring, for wine production by others, so we'll see how that works out.

Grass Valley is near, or is, a Southern sympathizers haven from long ago, how is your wife dealing with that?
