Apple: Virus wormed into some iPods
POSTED: 10:13 a.m. EDT, October 18, 2006

NEW YORK (Reuters) -- Some of Apple Computer Inc.'s iPod digital music players shipped in the past month carry a computer virus, according to a posting on Apple's technical support Web site.

Apple said since September 12, less than 1 percent of Video iPods -- pocket-sized devices that can play music files and video clips -- left its contract manufacturer carrying the virus RavMonE.exe, which affects computers running Microsoft Corp.'s Windows operating system.

"So far we have seen less than 25 reports concerning this problem. The iPod nano, iPod shuffle and Mac OS X are not affected, and all Video iPods now shipping are virus free," the company said on the site.

Apple said the virus can be detected and removed using many popular anti-virus software programs.

Representatives for Apple and Microsoft were not available to comment further Wednesday morning.
Ah, so if you own an Apple computer, then the virus won't affect you. Hook it up to a PC and you infect it with a worm. nice.

Machevellian. . . In a weird sorta' way I like it.

I'm actually surprised stuff like this hasn't been seen before - like Pepsi chemically developing their product so if it ever comes in contact with residual Coca-Cola in a person's system it explodes or something. . . . Think of the possibilities. There's a good screenplay in there somewhere. . .

Jeff, even the ability to dream up something like that suggests you are a very deranged person. Have you ever considered a life in politics or a major fuel company (not certain there is a difference anymore)?

Kinda like Sonys rootkit fiasco, or shades of MS players EULA.
But those are quite legal and accepted.

MS has done stuff like this since the early days of DOS. For example, they'd throw a bogus error message if you were running DR-DOS, and if the MS C compiler was installed on a box with the Borland C dev kit, it would deliberately screw with the Borland bits.
