Boycott Stores Open on Thanksgiving

It's a shame that retailers can force employees in on Thanksgiving just to make a few extra bucks. It shows a lack of respect for the day. I am boycotting those stores that are open today in my neck o' the woods: K-Mart, CompUSA, BJs.

HardDrive 11-23-2006 09:59 AM

Force employees? Those folks are making time and a half today. I doubt any force was nessecary.

VaSteve 11-23-2006 11:21 AM

it might be nice to escape the family. too bad my office isn't open. lol

Porsche-O-Phile 11-23-2006 11:21 AM

They don't necessarily pay time and a half, but jobs are voluntary. If you don't like the thought of possibly being scheduled on Thanksgiving, ask for it off or don't work there.

The only stores I'm boycotting are the ones that have had plastic Santas and Christmas trees and music in their stores since before Halloween. That's the crap that irritates me.

(Shameless plug)

Nordstrom is DELIBERATELY not doing any holiday/Christmas stuff until tomorrow. For that, they're getting a very significant portion of my holiday shopping business. It's nice when a business lets people celebrate one holiday at a time - the fact that they've got enough common sense to recognize this is worth my business (and a letter thanking them, from a customer's standpoint, which I sent a week or so ago).

Damn, I'm going to have to boycott myself today.

I suppose you won't go to the local supermarket today if you need some butter.

Racerbvd 11-23-2006 11:40 AM

I just got back from a local bar, us single people need a place to give thanks too:D

Porsche-O-Phile 11-23-2006 11:57 AM

Sucks for me, I work at Disneyland and I will be there till midnight. So my Thanksgiving will only be leftovers.

Boycott business' open on thanksgiving?! I wish I could find anyplace at all that's actually open today.

The simple fact that almost no place is open sucks for those of us in the airline industry who are actually out on the road flying all of you folks to be with your families. Personally, I'm famished because I can't find one darn place open here near my hotel in San Jose, CA.

Not everyone can be home on Thanksgiving. For those of us NOT home today, I guess it's a forced day of fasting.

Happy Thanksgiving from the Naval Brig Puget Sound in Seattle. We're open today!

No they aren't. A few maybe, but that's very rare. Most common retail places don't pay any different on holidays. I used to work at an autoparts store that was open 364 days a year and paid the same crap days every one of them. I'd have gladly never worked Thanksgiving, but that usually wasn't an option. I'd gladly boycott stores open on Thanksgiving.

masraum 11-23-2006 03:56 PM

Almost everyplace around here is open today. Both of my kids are working at a place that serves food, and on the way back from my mother in laws I passed plenty of parking lots with cars.

what really is so special about thanksgiving that it deserves so much respect? it's not a religious holiday, not that that matters. it's just another day off that tends to include a great meal. who or what are we supposed to respect? just wondering.

Bryan Beaumont 11-23-2006 04:40 PM

Respect for who? I just need to know?
BTW---I was happy the local Bagel shop
was open to serve me a bagel and coffee
this morning, I might of starved to death:D

Get the Concierge to check a few places in downtown Palo Alto or Sunnyvale, I think there's a few there, you can take a taxi up and back. Expensive, sorta', but beats nothing. Find out if the Los Gatos Brewing Company is open, good beer and food, and not more than 15 miles from your location.

I work in a hospital. Does that apply to the proposed boycott?

Eric-325I 11-23-2006 05:26 PM

I work at a cheese making plant. My guys are making big bucks and not complaining... I get 4 hours comp time :-(

Happy Day to everyone.

I sure was happy to be able to fill up with gas and coffee today for my drive to NJ. I won't ever boycott that gas station. I'm sure the owner was crying all the way to the bank and has probably never even heard of Thanksgiving.
