Toyota to Open Another US Plant

an associate wrote this, thought it interesting...

Toyota Reportedly Set To Open Another U.S. Manufacturing Plant
By Tom Granahan, Editor-In-Chief, Manufacturing.net
Manufacturing.Net - January 4, 2007
Not content with its recent market-share gains versus its U.S. counterparts, Toyota Motor appears poised to open an eighth North American manufacturing plant in an effort to grab a bigger slice of the pie.

The Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with the matter, reported Thursday that Toyota may name as early as this month a site in the Southern U.S. for the plant, an indication the auto giant is looking to take even more market share in the U.S.

The paper said Toyota has narrowed its site search to five locations, including Chattanooga, Tenn., Marion, Ark., the Alamo, Tenn., area, and a spot in North Carolina. The company already has large facilities in Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee, Alabama, and Kentucky.

Citing the source, the Journal said the latest facility would have manufacturing capacity of 200,000 vehicles per year and would begin production in 2009. The plant would likely make the next-generation Toyota Highlander SUV.

The source also said Toyota has postponed building a new engine plant in the United States and will probably instead expand its existing engine-manufacturing plants in the U.S., perhaps by enlarging its plant in Alabama.

On Wednesday, Ford and GM posted sharp declines in their December U.S. auto sales, while Toyota said its sales surged. Toyota is now the third-largest auto maker in the United States, and is closing in on No. 2 Ford.

It's a question of time before Toyota will be the the first one...message to Ford/GM engineers...take a toyota engine...open it up...and built the same engine for yours !"/$%%? vehicle that nobody want to get...! May be if you put a decent engine in...the situation will be better.

A good friend of mine works for Toyota. He is what they call a, "green field" engineer...meaning he, his teams and many others get to the "green field" and build a car plant.

He is now living in San Diego, working on a HUGE plant in Tecate, MX. I was grateful to get a tour of the plant he helped build in Evansville, Indiana.

His opinion? It is not so much about the engineering as it is about management. Toyota lets their engineering talent be talented.

+1 I can't tell you how much I'd love to buy GM/Ford but give me something to buy! The middle management bureaucracy in these companies is as powerful and mediocre as ever and so far, has not been challenged or affected. As trite as this may sound, it truly is about design and engineering. These companies can do it. Their respective bureaucracies will not allow it. For now, I'm strictly euro but, regrettably, I'm starting to see fat there too.... American focus, American fat.

The issue with Ford is gross inefficiencies in manufacturing and non value added expenses. Toyota is the efficient low cost manufacturer that has its supply chains in line, an area that Ford has neglected to rectify time and time again as a good fiscal quarter would gloss over it until the last year saw a severe downturn in truck and SUV sales which are Ford's bread and butter.

They have almost every asset up as collateral right now to aquire operating cash to turn the business around and restructure. Its do or die time...

Alan Mullaly, the new CEO of Ford recently pointed to a table in his board room meeting as there sat 12 different prop rods to hold up the hoods in various different Ford vehicles. This is classic...the customer doesn't give a rats rear about prop rods yet Ford gets to manage 12 different prop rods and who knows how many other non common parts from one platform to the next.

If I were in the position to buy, it would be an F150 over a Tundra as I do think it is the better truck overall. What confuses me is the F150 in an XL, STX, XLT, Lariat, FX4, or the Harley version, King Ranch, and it goes on and on. Managing all those different models and SKU's is not cheap and one has to wonder if the expenses of doing so get to the point of a diminishing return.

Dude c'mon, who wouldn't want a Solstice, or a Viper, or a Vette?

And what is it exactly that Toyota offers that is so 'exciting' to drive? I personally think Toyota's suck, but then that might be the 3 toyota motors i've had blow on on me in my lifetime so far....

I hope Ford finally dies this time. I can't stand mustangs.
