The wife and I are planning to drive to SF tomorrow 4:30 am
What is your opinion on the 5 opening or should I just take the 101?

Take water, food and sleeping bags, no matter what. Its winter out there and more storms coming.
If you have it in the car you usually do not need it...

Take the 101. You can always cut back over to the 5 on the 41.

Tomorrow will be fine. The CHP are already escorting the backup over the pass at 9AM. Keep the speed down, and expect black ice in the cold / shady spots, and you'll be fine.

I'd go with the 101. They said the grapevine would be open today, but there's gonna' be one helluva backup.
The 101 is a zillion times nicer drive anyway.
