Another Tiger story. Being a golf nut I frequent a golf BBS (no OT though, lol). A guy there who lives in Florida said he was waiting in line at McDonalds about 2-3 weeks ago and in walks Tiger and gets in line right behind him. Guy turns around and says:
"Aren't you Tiger Woods?" Tiger: "Yeah." Guy: "You're at McDonald's??" Tiger: "I eat too you know." Tiger apparently ordered a Big Mac meal with Diet Coke, supersized of course. Another amazing Tiger moment: Bill Bradley did an interview with him for 60 minutes a couple years ago. They did most of the interview on the range while Tiger hit balls. Bradley brought up the famous bouncing the ball on a wedge then hitting it in mid-air shot that he did for a Nike commercial. Bradley asked Tiger how many takes that took, Tiger says "One." So Tiger then starts telling this story about how he learned to do that, says he was just out on the range messing around as a teenager and decided to see if he could bounce a ball off a wedge, sure enough it worked. Then he decided to see how many times he could bounce it in a row, then under his leg, over his leg, around the back, whatever. The amazing thing is Tiger is bouncing this ball all over the place during this entire time. Behind his back, turn around 360 and catch it, under the leg, the whole time talking to Bradley like it is nothing. Then he says that he decided to see if he could hit the ball in midair after bouncing it, he bounces it up a little higher in the air, regrips the club as it is coming down and hits it right down the range. Bradley was just amazed...one take. The guy is the best golfer of our time, perhaps the best of all time...enjoy it while you can.

Somewhat off-topic in OT, but FWIW, my brother-in-law and three other guys just finished second in the Cadillac Invitational at Sawgrass a couple of weeks ago. They were tied for first at the end and lost the playoff. My brother-in-law (who evidently can crush the ball) won an award for longest drive (he said he routinely hits it 360-380 yards).

Then they must have done a bunch of other takes after they had the one take in the can, because I've seen the outtakes of that commercial and it shows him messing up a lot.
Anyways, have you ever tried it? Very hard to get just a few bounces with the club right in front of you. how he can do that is unreal . . . superhuman hand/eye coordination. |

Wow, 360-380 is pretty amazing. I hit the ball pretty far compared to most golfers and 300 is a good drive for me. I've scaled back a little on my swing speed to get more control and my average drive is about 285 or so.
If he can hit it 360 even sorta straight he's gotta be near scratch.

Woods is the greatest of all time, no question. If I believed in the idea of sports heroes, he would be mine.

Another true Tiger Story
1990 Ben Hogan AJGA Tournament, TPC Las Colinas in Irving, TX Tiger: Get me one of those towels (points to towel another player has) My brother: Get one yourself, like he did. They are in the locker room. Tiger: You'll do what I ask you to do. My brother: No I won't. (walks off) (My brother worked for the club, but fetching towels was not one of his duties.) Typical 15 yr old pitches royal Tiger fit. Good player, never will like him.

Well, first off, the guy was at an AJGA event and was a competitor. Yes it sounds like he was rude.
Second, he was 15. I know I came off as a smartass quite a bit when I was 15. Now that he is older you might want to cut him some slack.

That was a watered version of what actually took place. I know 15 yr olds can be unruly at times, but this was not the time nor the place to act out. He was INVITED to play in this tournament.
To me that means being on your best behavior at all times, in all places. Parenting says a ton about this guys character flaws. Earle was (in the afore mentioned episode) an arsehole too. Have you ever seen any interviews with him before he passed? The guy was not someone I'd associate with. Like father like son. I'm not the type of person to pass judgement quickly. Tiger hasn't passed my litmus test, then nor now.

In my opinion Scott DeCandia was the last of the long drive champions.
Technology has ruined the game, and competitions. That said, I love toeing a TM R7 350 yards. It's a joke to be able to hit it far now.

I heard Seve (Ballesteros) when he was a kid used to walk the mile and a half to where he played golf bouncing the ball off a club the whole way.
No doubt Tiger's the best now, but best ever that is impossible to say. Bobby Jones quit the game when he was 28 I believe . Jack wasn't chasing anyones records. Tom Morris hit what was a rock with a stick on the same courses they play today , though they were not so well tended - and he would shoot in the 60's ! Tiger is a putz. Great golfer but a Putz.

The game ended when Francis Ouimet won the 1913 US Open. He never turned pro. Jones merely followed his path later on.
Tiger could be the greatest player of this modern era. He's still a schmuck though. He couldn't break par with my clubs!

Kind of like some high school quarterback walking onto the field for the super bowl against the great steelers or 49rs or etc. and winning it on a last minute drive. Not sure what you mean about the Jones thing.
