In fact I ended up spending the entire weekend doing homework, so it was a crappy weekend for me at least...

The young hip hopper(don"t know his name) jumping around with work boots on and grabbing his crotch did not impress me much.

I didn't see any of it because awards shows are for chicks.
But I did *hear* all of it because it was on while I was in the garage doing manly things, like working on my car. I actually thought it sounded pretty good, the performances were for the most part good. Well performed, and I liked most of the songs. I've never heard a Justin Timberlake song in my life, but his was pretty good. Maybe I'm getting old. The type of songs that I absolutely HATE are the ones where some chick is oversinging all the notes, basically just screaming, usually while waving one hand in the air for emphasis. Like that Whitney Houston song from 10 years ago that lead to documented cases of people being driven to kill each other after being subjected to it too many times. I figured the show would basically be one after another of those types of songs, but there was only one that I could remember hearing. I've of course heard of the Dixie Chicks, but not any of their music. I thought their song was very good. But their winning is definately based on stuff other than their music. They're looking like geniuses now. They were militant Bush-is-an-ultimate-moron-anti-war before militant Bush-is-an-ultimate-moron-anti-war was cool. After 3 years they've been vindicated because as it turns out, they were right. 3 years ago, their blunt approach was too much even for many entertainers to embrace - now we have people in Congress emulating them. it was a bit of a medley...they shifted to Driven to Tears in the middle, singing the lyrics of Roxanne over the top of it.
Stewart Copeland is one of the greatest drummers ever. I'd rather listen to him than any of the bombastic chopmeitsters out there... |

I remember as a teen watching the Grammy's mostly for the live performances (at that time no MTV, just "Midnight Special" and 'Don Kirschners rock Concert" to see bands). It was "Toto" up against "Taste of Honey" for best new group. Guess who won. Never again. "Get Down, Boogie Oogie Oogie".
